Linux Challenge

I am going to start by saying other then the names(ubuntu, mint and so on) I know absolutly nothing about linux.

Now that we got that out of the way I would like to challange Tek Syndicate (pls dont bash me)

Here is the challange:

I have a few not so old parts hanging around and dont mind getting a few new ones. what I want to do

is put together a private personal use server for the following things

  • Email server thing
  • Cloud for all my music, movies, pictures, some work files (sketches and drawings, word documents, pdf, powerpoints ) I know logan might have mentioned doing a video of setting a cloud up
  • Possible future website
  • and a metaphorical security gate for my home network
(if this stuff is even possible)

So if some one could make a guide of:

  • where to get linux
  • how to install linux
  • how to use linux
  • how to do the above mentioned items

but the biggest thing is the guide has to be for someone that is an idiot and a total zombie.

for example

1 go to downloadhereDOTcom

2 download

3 download this program to make boot disk on flash drive

4 this is how you make a boot disk

....

cause i can tell you now i will find a way to fuck up. what i can do is basic html and some css that i learn from a tutorial i can do some things in cmd like the ipconfig and so on, and that is as far as i get in being a tek head im more of a tek tadpole

I'm sure a few others would like some sort of linux guide aswell

Thanx in advanced if anyone can pull this off!

Your best bet would be Ubuntu server ,  http://www.ubuntu.com/ , there you will find downloads and tutorials to make your server experience easier...

since you want to do networked pictures and music, use freenas. actualy, that might be confusing, so use ubuntu server til your comforatable using it.

*download distro (in this case ubuntu server)

*download YUMI

*use yumi to install ubuntu server to a flash drive

*plug flash drive into your server computer

*enter boot menu and pick your flash drive

*live boot and run the installer

Is It Possible to use a GUI Version of linux as a server? for the things i mentioned in the first post?

Don't bother with the email server, not even as a learning experience.

Security Gate = pfSense

Website and File Server = Install Ubuntu Server and "sudo apt-get install lamp owncloud"

If you don't have fast upload speeds, your website and file server will be useless outside of your network.
