This question is for Wendell.
Knowing that you have had bad experience with Seagate drives, what is your opinion on Linus using a boatload of them in his new server?

He does put servers in bathrooms so....
Jokes aside, I think you will find that Linus probably hasn't had bad experiences with them so each to their own.
Everyone has different experiences - personally I swear by Seagate drives - I have NEVER had one go bad on me, however I have had a Hitachi (HGST) crap itself, and the warranty replacement was DOA, and the following replacement died after two months.
Logan likes HGST and that is fine by me but I would never buy one again.
Its pretty much luck of the draw. EVERY brand has drives that die, its just random if you get a good one or not.
^yeah, I had never had one gone bad on me as well. Also, the school I go to has like all kinds of mechanical seagate and hitachi drives that are pretty old, and are constantly abused for so many years. (It's being used for all kinds of things) and I have only seen a few die but most are still operational. I benchmarked some and all were still in good condition.
True.... I (many moons ago) bought a Maxtor drive, only for it to crap its pants a few months later. Sent it off to Maxtor in Ireland who sent out a new one (which turned out to be DOA) I swore never to use Maxtor again. That was when I started using Western Digital. No problems!!! My Dad, however once bought a WD drive which failed. He told me that he never had any problems with Maxtor. Maxtor was acquired by Seagate Technology in 2006.
i dont realy think, that there is such a one brand is better then the other, wenn it comes to mechanical HDD´s.
Its just a matter of luck if you ask me, i had manny diffrent brand hdd´s, and i cant realy say which brand is obviously better, to be honnest.
Mechanical parts of a hdd will allways fail at a certain point.
Don't worry, HGST will go to crap too. They are a western digital company, and no longer under the authority of Hitachi. Mechanical hard drives are simply at the end of their life as far as technology goes. It really doesn't matter what brand you get, a mechanical hard drive fails inevitably. So do SSDs, but physics in general give SSDs the upper hand in reliability. Eventually all mechanical hard drive companies will have to bail on that technology.
I think it will be a while before hard drives are fazed out. SSD's, though good, still have a way to go.
There are definitely issues with some of the Seagate Drives.
Seems like some of them just fail at if they hit a certain temp, or after a certain amount of time. I don't think I would buy a Seagate drive, I'd rather buy WD or Hitachi.
2TB Caviar Black is more than I'll ever need. That and my 128GB 840 pro
I can hardly keep my seagates under 30 degrees, they mostly run at 32 degrees in canadian summer. I never had problem with any of then though.....but I'm sure I'll loose one in the next days just because I said that.
lol :P
I'd love to see Google's drive statistics
Edit: as they are known to run their data centers hot
