I am a long time user of linode. I run it for reverse proxying and as a self hosted web vpn to keep my isp from spying on me. My question is, is it still worth it with akamai purchase? Or is something like what linus is sponsored by (hetzner) a more cost friendly option? I use the nanodes have three of them totalling 15 a month. I do not recall what I use to pay but I do not think it was more than 2 a month. Seems to be 5 now.
Comparing hetzner to linode price is similar per cpu core and gb or ram. I get way more transfer bandwidth. 20tb of bandwidth per month vs 1 tb per tier of linode.
Hetzner is fine, does not have a significant cloud offering, but does the basics, root server, VPS, firewalls, basic storage. They are trustworthy and have been around for ages. Biggest hoster besides AWS around here I think.
Yeah, I was running Hetzner in parallel with Linode for a year or so, but switched over completely last month. Price to performance is incredible and there is no significant issues with the service itself.
Their DNS console is annoying (you can’t just turn off domains but keep the records, it tends to error out a lot and requires reloading the page), Linode has a much better one.
I am a hobby user, so take my conclusions with a grain of salt.
Personally, I’d avoid hetzner for anything important that you don’t want to lose. Over the years they’ve been prone to suddenly flipping the middle finger to customers, and demanding invasive things like passports for ID.
They operate on thin margins, which attracts many unsavory customers, which hetzner culls with somewhat understandable brutality.
But this means when they come for you, don’t expect much customer service, and you better have recent local backups because they repeatedly have deleted everything under an account with no recovery possible.
