Question for you guys using Linode. Have you noticed newer Linodes having worse performance?
I have a Nanonode that hosts a small website (Also cached with CloudFlare) that runs Debian 10, and for whatever reason if I try upgrade to Debian 11 or 12, it breaks a bunch of stuff
Instead of trying to fix it, I decided to just make a new Linode running Debian 12, and move everything, which gives me the chance to clean up some configs and actually make documentation
Everything is going smooth and I have about half of the configuration moved over, but now I’m noticing that the CPU will spike to over 120% every few hours, making the entire Linode unresponsive
I’m thinking its entirely on the Linode end, as my configuration is identical
Well, I think it might be time for me to leave… I have a separate issue on a different Linode where restoring a backup always fails, and this is what support tell me
But, but… They submitted your feedback so in the future, useful feedback will never happen… Lol, rip, sorry bud. sorry for blaze attitude. I only lightly used their services, and they were good enough for my needs
Linode was bought out recently and almost immediately raised prices. Their support has been on a slow downward trajectory for years though IMO. I’ve been using them since 2010 and they have been fantastic for years, but they stand out much less nowadays.
One issue for Linode is that linear pricing makes them very uncompetitive at the high end of resources. It’s much cheaper to get a dedicated server from somewhere once you hit the middle of their product stack, so unless you really rely on their platform for automation at scale, it doesn’t make much sense financially.
With performance issues in the past, I have been able to watch the %st on the CPU and they have moved my instance to a different host if it is consistently high. I hope they still do that if you have performance issues. Worth opening a ticket to see.
Yeah, I used to have the the 2GB RAM Shared CPU one, mainly just to get the 2TB transfer (Which I never get close to anyway) and then they raised the price by 20%, and I realized I could just move down to the 1GB RAM Shared CPU which never increased in price
So I ended up giving them half the amount of money in the end. STONKS
Up until the switch I never had a single problem. Performance was great, backups AND restores worked. Now, price increases, performance down the toilet, restores don’t work (For a paid add-on mind you!)
I’m probably going to look at moving my services back home. I moved it into the cloud to avoid downtime when working on services at home, but now its getting to the point where my house setup is more reliable than the cloud.
I’ve increased my resiliency at home, while the cloud keeps getting worse
Of course, they don’t give 2 poops about a small guy like me, so whatever
