Lightweight VM setup? (Linux hosting Windows)

I am working on a fix for a windows game. I am using Zig, but I just found that netListenIpWindows does not seem to work, under multiple versions of Proton (Steam), and returns “Unexpected” error, same binary works on Windows directly.

My idea is to use whole VM instead of Proton. (Is it a good idea on a laptop?)

I really do not want to boot windows for every test, do I have any other option?

(Assuming no.) Can you recommend me what would be the lightest VM setup? It is a laptop, so storage is quite limited, and there is no second GPU, but for this game running DX 9.0c on CPU should be fine (I hope) , for testing I do not need even 10 FPS…

My experience with running DX in a VM without a GPU has been less than 1 FPS. It will run, but calling it a slideshow is giving it more credit than it deserves.

Maybe it will work if it’s an old game that was designed with software rendering in mind.

I dont know if this is the most lightweight but WinBoat is a nice and easy one and they are working on performance improvements.

WinBoat runs surprisingly acceptable with 0 GPU acceleration, maybe I should have given it more than 3 vCPU cores… and it is kind of choppy, but I would bet average FPS is over 1, probably way below 10…

Have you tried Lutris? If it’s an old game, it may run fine under a VM if you allow hardware passthrough. I have an issue where EA Games launcher will run in Steam for a while and just stop working until I re-install it. But it’s one of those things you just have to keep trying different things out to get working.

DX9 is pretty old - DX10 launched with vista like 20 years ago.

Software rendering of dx9 maybe fine on a modern cpu?

I’m sure there are some games you can run on the CPU.

I think the oldest game I’ve tried to run without a GPU is Diablo 3, and I doubt you will be able to run it on the CPU.

It’s 13 years old, and it was launched for DX9.

They are working on this problem you can follow the progress in their discord.
