Level1techs KVM Questions

Hey everyone,

I have pursued a setup where I am moving my home client machines into my rack on the other side of the house.

For my main workstation I have three 75ft fiber optic active long range displayport cables and one 75ft active 10gig USB-C extension stretching from my rack/server area to my office, then in my office I have a USB hub with a 10gig USB-C input to breakout USB connectivity for my needs (External USB Audio DAC, Microphone, keyboard and mouse mostly)

My main machine is a Threadripper 3960x, which is excellent for my work, but the single threaded performance is starting to get a little bit old for some newer games (cough Starfield cough)

I have been looking at consumer motherboards to replace the Threadripper in my workstation, but I simply can’t find any that have sufficient PCIe lanes for my needs. That, and it is pretty expensive to keep upgrading a Threadripper every couple of years just to keep up with games, especially since AMD ditched the TRX40 platform they swore up and down they were going to support long term, and never released any Zen3+ parts for it, making Threadripper a “Pro” only chip instead.

So, my thought is, I’ll just hold onto the threadripper, remove my fancy GPU that I use for games, and stick it in a separate cheaper gaming only machine, and put a cheaper low end GPU in the threadripper.

Only downside is that I need a a 3 screen 2 PC KVM switch so I can switch between them.

The Level1Techs unit that does this seems excellent.

The question I have is, if I put the L1T KVM in the computer closet, on the opposite side from where I am and use the 75ft 10gig USB-C cable from the KVM to my USB hub in my office, will the remote keyboard shortcuts to switch machines still work, or do I need a keyboard plugged directly into the dedicated USB-A port?

Otherwise I am going to ahve to run 4 more cables from the server room to my office, and the first time was a pain in the ass (and those active cables aren’t exactly cheap)

Appreciate any thoughts or ideas.

Thanks,
Matt
