So... we shouldn't use 2-factor authentication by text message for anything at all? I assume we shouldn't use by voice as well? What other methods would be acceptable then for 2-factor authentication? Should we just leave the phone bit out of 2-factor authentication entirely?

Have to use a credit card to access porn?

pfff. i can walk into walmart and get a credit card in under 5 mintues

I am skeptical about the Hyperloop. Vacuum chambers are really expensive to build an maintain, and if the tube gets damaged, everyone dies in the tube.

I don't think that it would pass basic safety regulations. How do you get out in case of a fire?

vacuum out the fire ofc /s

Obligatory "The Patreon Link in the 'Listen to this as a podcast' section is still wrong". I still believe.

I'm not really familiar with credit cards, even less so in the US, but don't you have to register them on your name and/or bank account? The money has to come from somewhere, right? Or is it some kind of pre-paid credit card thing?

I assume they are talking about text message like SMS. Text message via dedicated app that encrypts the transfer shouldn't be an issue I assume, because... encryption. If they were sent via Signal ,Telegram or hell even Whatsapp it should be fine.

Paywall News/China Firewall:
As much as I can understand you hating paywall sites, journalism surprisingly actually needs some money to work. They are in the same place as you are, no money, no content. And the issue with Journalism is more problematic. You do this channel in your freetime, and if there's no content for a while, well, it happens, but if a newspaper can't get stories out anymore they're kinda screwed. Imo Journalism is more important these days than it was in the past, and thanks to reader apps and what not revenue for newspapers has declined dramatically in the past years. And printed papers... well, nobody reads those anymore anyway.

Game of Thrones Letters:

  1. Who is still stupid enough to download this stuff on torrent. at launchday. at all. wtf?
  2. legal alternatives are cheap as fk and readily available basically everywhere, probably even faster and better then downloading them through shady means...
  3. if you're such a "fan" you should maybe support the people that worked on this for a year.
  4. not even mad about this, they can get them and pay what they owe. just pay for that stuff in the first place, it's cheap enough.

On a sidenote: The downloads have for the first time not broken the records of the previous season at launch.

is a prepaid card thing but i have to give 0 info and most sites accept it no problems

Question is if they would accept it then

Or go to a porn site that's outside of UK's jurisdiction. PornHub the most popular porn site is registered in Canada and owned by a company that's resides in Luxembourg so it will not be affected by this ID check.

Although UK is the 3rd biggest producer of porn in the world. So all 52 000 000 sites will have to get ID checks or move somewhere else. http://fightthenewdrug.org/porn-stats-which-country-hosts-most-porn/

You don't. You fight the fire with extinguisher like Rambo.

About the HBO sending notices. I never got any notice or even met someone who would get such letter. I guess this is purely a USA thing. And isn't pirating GOT a second nature by now? I don't know of anyone who watches the show through legal means.

Paying monthly subscription just for one show is stupid. The second easiest way to watch GOT is to buy Blu-ray box set which is anything but cheap. 95£ for 6 seasons on amazon and 25£ for individual season when it's new. In store disks will cost even more.

So it's only natural to go to the high seas.

And who are you the proud lord said,
That I must bow so low.

Just a cat of different coat
is all the truth I know.

In coat of gold or coat of red
Lion still has claws

And mine are long and sharp my lord
As long and sharp as yours....

Since you said "most" sites I assumed that they already have a check in place if those are regular or pre-paid cards. They could just block pre-paid cards alltogether if that's the case.

you run into the same problem as end to end encryption messaging services. Block one and another pops ups

as far as china deleting images/videos , this has been possible for a long time. ive done it before to blur suspect porn from my kids.
use this guide to do this.

So something like Google's accounts system - 2 factor authentication where it sends you a text message or whatever as an additional step of verification should not be used, correct? That's my understanding.

Since you already opened another topic on this, it's better to discuss it there to not split the topics

For others for reference:

Okay

I look forward to your response there

What's the "thing better than torrenting" that Ryan is alluding to at 44:30 ?

I can't wait for Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor.. this is going to be badass. She is fantastic and has kicked ass in Broadchurch, the butthurt entertains me.

Usenet. And I know some people whine about 'it isn't free' and you probably need a good indexer, but totally worth it. You can get 50 non-expiring GB for $10 and probably better deals than that. Skip a few trips to Starbucks for the entire GoT season. You can also buy those GB with bitcoin and use a VPN for peace of mind.
