Level1 News: [Community Thread]

@wendell mentioned in the last teampgp stream that we are free to make a thread with suggestions for the so far unnamed news show. He pointed to Eden's Linux news post for ideas of how to format it. Here is my attempt at a nice thread of news stories. I know I will be adding some stuff in the Games section simply because Blizcon starts tomorrow, and if anything else comes up I will be more then happy to add to it.

If I didn't link to a story or article you feel like is good, feel free to link it below and lets get a conversation started.

My list will be formatted by type of story, Hardware, internet, OS/software and other.

Also I know next to nothing about Linux and the happenings in that world I will let @Eden take care of that if he so desires.

Internet, and IoT

Comcast starts to roll out gigabit
Comcast plans on rolling out 1 and 2 Gigabit to certain cities. The 1 gigabit one seems like a good value(no data caps) if you can get a Comcast rep that knows what is going on.

Cisco tells people not to worry about IoT, they've got ideas about securing the IoT
Cisco says that since they are the leader of IoT devices they have plans to have Whitelists for the IP addresses it can access and other things...seems like something that should have been thought of before mass production of IoT devices...read the article, it goes into more detail then I will here.

Hardware

Nvidia puts telemetry in drivers
This has been discussed in this forums already, but I am gonna put it here for posterity. Also to me this is pushing me more and more toward AMD.(waiting for vega to come out to see if I need an upgrade)

VRAM issues on GTX1070s. BIOS update to the rescue
It seems like the original 1070s used Samsung memory and now some vendors have been using Micron's version and the BIOS isn't providing enough power to the VRAM, leading to strange artifacts, and other graphical anomalies.

EVGA GTX10XX cards have VRM issues and can cause failure, EVGA sends thermal pads and BIOS update
EVGA's ACX 3.0 cooler does not have a thermal pad between the VRM and the actual heat plate of the cooler. This has caused catastrophic failure on a few cards, and other cards have just stopped working. EVGA is offering to send the thermal pads that should have been on the cards in the first place, also they plan on sending out a new BIOS to change the fan curve.

EVGA's page on the issue and their solution
Personally I don't think this is quite enough on EVGA's part. They arent shipping new cards with the thermal pads, just a louder fan curve, and if you want them they will send you the thermal pads. If the need for thermal pads is great enough for you to have a webpage where consumers can get free ones, the need is great enough for you to install them from now on, on the cards affected by this short sighted money saving trip.

Games

GOG fall sale means free games!
To entice customers to look at their service and client during their fall sale GOG is offering a few free games.

Steam requires in-game screenshots as promo pictures so problems like "No Man's Sky" and "Watch Dogs" should be mitagated
Remember how the things in the pictures on the steam page of "No Man's Sky" didn't exist in the release version of the game, or how "Watch Dogs" didn't look as good as the pictures. Well hopefully this new update puts a stop to that. Steam now requires in-game screenshots.

Bethsada being dicks about review copies of games.
I don't think this is a good thing from the consumer side of things. They are restricting information on games while still wanting to sell it to the consumer before people can see objective and subjective information on the thing they are selling. In short don't pre-order games peeps.

Blizcon:
New Hearthstone xpac
New cards, new mechanics, new hole in my wallet.

New skins and characters for Overwatch and HoS
New things for Overwatch and Heroes of the Storm, if you want them you need to play the other game.

New class for Diablo III
They are adding a new class for Diablo III and balance changes.

ESPORTS TOO!!!
Watch all of them, it is what Blizzard wants you to do.

OS/Software

Microsoft Flow is out of Beta
Microsoft Flow is like ITTT and doesn't have the same amount of 3rd party support out of the gate, but is not in direct competition with ITTT.

Microsoft stops selling OEM versions of Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. AKA: ALL MUST BOW TO WINDOWS 10.
Microsoft stops selling OEM versions of Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 to system builders. (you probably will be able to find copies at Microcenter since I know they started to horde OEM licenses as of two years ago while I worked for them)

Other

Amazon starts to charge differently for non-prime members at their physical stores
Seems like Amazon wants to charge customers that are not prime members a bit more when they buy items from Amazon physical locations.

Also I am sure that later posts will have more content and lipstick, This is the first news style post I have created.

Nice work. Going to take a look at some of these links. These types of threads are great for folks like me who don't have as much time as we'd like to keep up on things. The same reason why I really like the weekly news shows.

Really good job @SantaClausiim, you seemed to have got that together much faster and more nicely formatted than me xD

It's nice for me since I have recently got some time on my hands and needed something to do. And I get to look into things that I probably would have missed too.

Thanks, I still think your post is a bit more together and visually interesting.
