Wendell: “I kinda wish the Windows app store was not a completly useless pile of crap. Could you imagine using it to update Adobe and Java?”

you mean like evey single Linux distro currently availible? They have been taking every single feature from the Linux desktop, so why not this one too?

Also, there are like tons of free alternatives to MSPaint, so whatever. But yeah, they have to think of the low tier meme makers. MSPaint is also pretty decent for pixel art. Seriously.

Finally, it’s my time to shine and show the world I have knowledge about irrelevant stuff!

CORRECTION: Paint is also used to create HIGH QUALITY memes, mainly polandballs

Regarding Teslas Middle Console Screen…

I don’t see why that screen would be a huge distraction just because it’s touch, compared to “traditional” middle consoles with a million buttons and nobs. How is this different? The only difference is the type of interaction, it’s functionally the same.
And it’s not really clear to see, but it looks like that tachometer is in a similar position to where some of the Toyotas have their tachomenter, they just have it on a display on top of the middle console in this cave-like thing.

They also have those screens in all their Teslas right? Not just the new model.

being able to feel the buttons/knobs and not have to look away from the road.

I used to be able to text from my 3310 in class from my pocket, can’t do that on a touch screen.

yeah they do, tho in the S the screen is larger and vertical

That thing between Zuckerberg and Musk is pretty bantom vs cruiser. Zuckerberg completely misrepresented Musk’s position on AI. He suggested that Musk was arguing against AI wholesale. I can’t know what he was thinking; but it seems like he believes that public awareness of the risks associated with AI could lead to regulation. He is of course opposed to that. His statement was so ridiculous that it didn’t even make sense. He said “arguing against AI is arguing against safer cars”.

Believe it or not, there has been a lot of praise of Zuckerberg’s stance; even though it’s completely nonsensical. It was entirely politically motivated. It was concern over public opinion, rather than what Musk was working on in reality. The people who support what Zuckerberg said are stupid about Sociology and Social Psychology. It also included one of the most prominent AI researchers…Andrew Ng. These people don’t want the populous to understand the issue. That in and of itself is one of the major dangers.

There is a common belief that AI will be human controllable. That to a certain extent is reasonable; but no one is drawing a line as to where that extent is relevant. It seems that the dumber AI like Narrow AI (what Zuckerberg was referencing) is pretty human controllable; if you code in safety precautions that keep them from turning the whole universe into paperclips. The smarter AI “AGI” (that Musk is referencing) is a completely different story. Any system that self organizes and has some influence over it’s own development of complexity has a degree of autonomy that defies any given systems control. Rather, general environmental influence is likely the most probable source of such a system’s behavior. This suggests that maybe we be careful what we teach AGI under development. In this sense, even Musk doesn’t really get it; but how is one to reject extra layers of caution? Open AI is a good thing and Zuckerberg is an idiot.

The most concerning AI development may be one that David Brin pointed out; and Benjamin Goertzel wrote about. AI (narrow AI) in big business has predatory aspects that would be extremely unfavorable in a complex, self-organizing system. These are the types of AI that are not a favorable candidate for AGI. The notion of an IQ cap on such developments is probably a pretty good idea. I doubt that Zuckerberg even understands this problem. He creates dangerous AI and he doesn’t seem to understand that either. He behaves like a sociopath; and he probably shouldn’t be allowed to make decisions about AGI. This is probably the root of what he’s whining about. His model isn’t and can’t safely be the end game.

Some people just don’t get that they can’t control it. All that can really be done is preventative measures in the nascent stages. Putting it on a favorable trajectory beforehand is the only thing that makes sense.

Narrow AI is completely irrelevant. That may be another reason that Zuckerberg piped up. He didn’t want to seem irrelevant.

There’s absolutely no need to worry about being tracked if you have an RFID chip in your hand. Just wear tin-foil gloves to block the signal.

Why do you hate Musk so much?

Where did you get that idea?

By the way- if you really want Android notifications on the desktop, KDE connect works great on Linux. It runs over the LAN and doesn’t go to the open internet, and lately it’s been better integrated into a bunch of desktops, Ubuntu Mate even directly includes it in the Software Boutique!

They are bitching about Musk almost every week. I don’t get it. Rockets are not as cool as gaming PCs with leds?

No one is notching about Musk?

Drones and rc helicopters/aircrafts are differnet in one important aspect: Drones are sold EVERYWHERE and as easy as it gets to control.
But try to get a decent quality RC helicopter that does not get blown away by the first breeze at a local store.
Also: Most RC vehicles do not have video feedback requireing the operator to stay in line of sight.

I feel like the whole AI debate is mostly just a PR stunt by Musk. He’s got this internet reputation of being Tony Stark, but it just seems a bit silly to be honest.

He does have a dog in the fight. He to is only working on narrow AI. A lot of the projects that large companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft etc. are working on are somewhat invasive and manipulative; and I think his concerns stem from there. I don’t think he realizes how limited his own knowledge of the subject is.

It is a fascinating thing though. At what point would you be concerned about AI? What would it take to scare you?

The level of concern people have depends on what they know, it seems. There are some people who are always concerned about terminators, grey goo etc, discount them.

However, it seems that they are already capable of a few things:

  • Predicting the future (Alpha go),
  • Imitating people on the internet, be it voice or video (look up that obama video),
  • Creating new means of communication,
  • Learing to run through obstacle courses,
  • Being a massive troll.

Granted, most of these are specialised cases. However they are ones we know about. The second point should be concerning, I would want to be doing important deals face to face.
