Lets talk about Star Citizen

OK so I love space simulators. One of my favorite genres.so when i saw Star Citizen on Kick Starter I was ecstatic! I didn't back it just because none in stock didn't quite suit me. So now that I've upgraded my pc I've looked into getting it. I think $40 is fine for the beta but there's a big part I don't like, paying extra money for each expansion. I can understand paying extra for a better ship while the game is in alpha/beta(and only in alpha/beta) in order to create a more varied ecosystem at launch. But having to pay $40 just to have a ship and walk around a hanger. Then another $5 for each expansion. I'm not saying it's a bad business model but I feel that this can get out of hand. Anyways i'd love to hear everyone's thoughts and opinions on it and if its worth the $45.

UPDATE: I feel stupid. I

the game is in a backing stage the more money they get the more stuff the game will have. the purpose of this business model is to get funding not compete with other games, and it is a alpha not a beta.

so if you love space sims and want to see more high quality ones then back it till your harts content.

No - just no.

You pay your $40 and you get a ship, and the game.

Each additional module gives you BETA access.  Your 40 dollars already bought you the game - you only pay more if you want beta access.  Same goes for the ships - all are available to be bought in game with in game currency after launch.

If you dont want to pay for beta access - dont.  After launch you original $40 will still give you Full and unrestricted game access.

currently if you just made an account today and you wanted to buy the game you can... keeping in mind only arena commander is out

When you buy a package you buy the game -listed under as 'Squadron 42 Digital Download' & 'Star citizen digital downlaod' and beta access (if you buy a package with it). However the game is not in beta yet- it's in a pre-alpha/alpha state and of you want to play that you need a $5 pass.

If you want to play the game right now the minimum you have to spend is $35 but this does not include beta access

  • $30 Aurora MR https://robertsspaceindustries.com/store/315-aurora-mr
  • $5 Arena Command pass https://robertsspaceindustries.com/store/403-arena-commander-pass

If you want the beta (which will not be out for a while) you'll either have to pay another $10 right now and get the MR+ or they will probably have another pass in the future for 10 or 5 bucks

What are you paying for right now?

  • game development All the funds being generated right now are used for hiring devs and external people to help build the game- they're even hired some crytek engineeers.
  • Early access to the game- they're a long way from launch let's face it
  • A ship you can get sooner in the game (all ships [exception of large carriers] will be able obtainable in game)
  • a starting amount of money (UEC)
  • a hanger- larger ship bought gets bigger hanger
  • insurance (set time)
  • and other various things in the package

Will this game be a F2P? Because it seems like a ripoff if you can get some ships only with real money.

The game is buy to play

All ships (some variants excluded) can be bought in game with in game currency that you earn as you go.

After you buy the game if you never want to spend another cent of real money - you will never have to.

I'm more excited for No Man's Sky to be honest. PC version is finally confirmed.

I'm highly interested but will support it only once the final release.

Empty words. The game looks more interesting. That's all that matters to me.

when you buy a ship package you get...

  • A ship you can get sooner in the game (all ships [exception of large carriers] will be able obtainable in game)

What do you mean some ships with real money? ALL ships you can get with in game money. The only exceptions are large carriers and the F7A that paw mentioned

Backed since the start as I'm a huge fan of past Roberts' games and space sims in general, spent way too much money on this game... then the arena commander came out and lets just say it needs a lot of balancing, fixing, less focus on making the thrusters accurately model in real time what they would do in space and more time spent on making the actual combat fun and tactical rather than point click rinse and repeat.

Once there is a finished product I will give it a try but until then, I will stick with EVE.

I'll probably pay the money once it's tangible ... and then if they offer  ...say ... a Firefly mod I'd be willing to pay even more $$$$  ... & so on ...

I know they are different games. Been playing EVE on and off since 2005 (No MMO like it). There are plans to tie Valkyrie to EVE like Dust 514/Project Legion.

I do have a few issues with the game

First, I don't like the ship rewards for the game, could lead to imbalance.

Second, It feels like Roberts Space Industries has bitten off more than they can chew.

I normally fund Kickstarters (Funded Planetary Annihilation) but SC seemed too good to be true. And if they prove me wrong, great! Once it is finished, I will pick it up.

Elite also looks sexy. I missed the founding for that but I plan on picking it up as well.

X:Rebirth did suck, so maybe that is why I am risk adverse now.

heh it is tangible... Hanger and arena commander are out and if you want something actually tangible there's a 3inch model of the conne if you buy the constellation package.

Serenity yea? Here's the freelancer, their tribute to firefly rotating engines too

But yes the game will be modable and I fully expect people to make X-wings and shit

First, I don't like the ship rewards for the game, could lead to imbalance.

Any ship that anyone buys right now will be able to be obtained in game without real money the only thing you get by buying a ship is the ship sooner- actual pay to win? NONONONO it's all based on peoples flight skill. I've faced plenty of hornets (combat oriented ship) in AC and have been able to take then out in a 300i (touring/sports vehicle)

I'm quite likely wrong but I thought I heard that there was some package with the kickstarter which gave you a hornet that was two seater, and the only way to obtain this ship was through the kickstarter. The only benefit of the ship however was that it was two seater, I don't even think the person in the second seat would be able to operate any weapons or other systems.

time to play freespace 2 again to rebuild my pilot skillz
