Let me know your feelings

Hello Guys at Tek Syndicate.

For me - I'm 28 y.o., from Austria (yeah, that small thing without sea-access in the middle of middle-Europe) and a junior economist working on his ... well ... phd-somethinglikethatwhatever ....

Since I always built my systems based on intel or nvidia-parts I thought it would be time for a change and I came across your FX 8350 video.

Alright, as I don't want to spend as much money as a 8-core equivalent intel would cost I'd just step up ahead, get me a 8320, overclock it a little bit and be good to go - so I thought.....

All suddenly fear kicked in - "would it be an as satistfactory experience as the newly build i3-4130- based system I built for my girlfried,.... how long would it take to start word ...."... and yeah ... just stupid stuff like that.

So ... I think someone should make a clear statement on that.

(you wouldn't believe how many people just burn money because they fear the amd 8350 wouldn't be enough for their winamp)

So - the clear question:

If you build something based on an amd fx ... does it "feel" as new as a haswell-based system to YOU?

(Wendell, Logan and Pistol - if possible)

I don't want this question to be answered by pure numbers or benchmarks or anything .... I just want to know if it would feel "new" ... or rather if it felt "new" to you (as Pistol already has/had an amd-based system).

I know that this is an age old question - but other than based on anything that could be argued with, I just want a clear statement from people that actually used both to their extent and lived next to it.

Yes, I read the rules - and yes I know, that I will be flamed (and possibly crucified....) for not putting this question in the "building" section.

But I think everyone on the whole planet - who has nothing to do with tech or anything - but uses a "personal" computer would be very relieved to clear that "word-opening" question.(I'm into tech and also afraid ... so maybe not only these types of people)

Anyways - thanks a lot for giving me the opportunity to express myself and I hope that I can see some new content of you SOON :P

See ya

Hahaha...trying to avoid buyers remorse when buying electronics. Just wait, that upgrade itch will hit you and it will be very hard not to scratch it.

If anything the 8320/8350 "feels" more up to date than even intel's highest end quad core, simply because you can say: "I HAVE EIGHT CORES!"

If you build something based on an amd fx ... does it "feel" as new as a haswell-based system to YOU?

I own both AMD and intel machines, and honestly, the 20% in performance here and there is unnoticeable.

Core 2 Due with an SSD feels waaay newer than i7 with a HDD, for example.

I built a system on 8320 a year ago and I would still choose it if I had to built a PC now. No buyer's remorse whatsoever.

I have an 8350 that I replaced my system with that was an i5. I'm honestly impressed by it and it's stock cooler. I do not regret buying that little chip one bit.

my 8320 is a tank. I bought to speed up searching for songs during DJing apps. It does it VERY well.I went a bit over budget and bought 16 gigs of 2133 in case I wanted to render as well. I love it.

Thanks a ton Guys :)

My System would only do stuff like totally not-professional Video editing, a little bit of R, SAS Sql etc. and of course play games while stream my complete stupid gameplay (yeah, the facepalm is strong within me)

Now I can build my new System - .... Where is my Dremel!!?!?!?!? XD

Dremel

No Guys, seriously ... because of the total, almost like a monopoly like, presence of intel on the cpu-market and benchmark publications and all .... many people are just afraid of AMD ... sounds stupid, but it definitely is that way.

Even the Guys at the Tech-Department in the company I work are like: "what! ... your building a new rig .... hope you use Intel!"

Part of that is also definitely the fact that AMD seems to have discontinued their FX-Series ... so many people think like "yeah ... I knew that no one would buy something that would take 2 seconds longer to open my excel .... no wonder that there isn't anything new coming along that line" ...

But I just didn't believe that as I explored the architecture and compared it to some examples intel gives e.g. Ivy Bridge VS Bulldozer.

But yeah ... that yould just go into numbers....

Anyways.

I have to thank you guys for clearing up the "feeling question" and for the destruction of my fear towards AMD.

TIME TO BUILD !

build

Aaaaaalright.

After some hours, days, months of engeneering, I finally ebayed and shopped my parts and put them together.

So ...

The Parts that I got were:

AMD FX 8320: 115€ -  I just thought: why the hell should I buy a 8350, when I can overclock this to the same speeds? And fuck, lets overclock the hell out of it.

Asus M5A97 Evo R2.0: 83€: The Cheapest borad, that could be reasonably overclocked on I think ... don't know why, but I basically had the feeling that this would work

8gb Gskill Ares 2133 Mhz Ram: 69€ Somehow I can't run this kit at 2133 - but 1866 works just fine

Samsung Evo 840 SSD : 00€ I had bought this essentially for my girlfried ... since she brought me her own SSD to put it in her computer, I just kept this :P

MSI GTX650 2GB OC: Impulse-Buy .... Actually this thing cost me about 15 Euros .... can't complain about the 1080p performance so far (I'm playing bulletstorm right now)

be quiet! System Power 7 500W (80+ Silver): 50€ The Fuck! .... 80+ Silver ... just enough Watts for my needs and at this price ... can't complain. - pretty silent also.

Be Quiet! Shadow Rock 2: 32€ Awesome Coller for little money

Fractal Design Define R4: 80€ Just needed a fat case for my crappy cable-management and it has got a built in fan-control - can't complain .... also they came down in Price

So .... the ones that calculated .... I got a fucking great rig with as less as 444€ - most expensive parts were the case and the CPU.

Also the overclocking went kinda good ..... I started with ai-suite 2, which overclockes the FSB ..... after that, I dialed up the multiplier as high as it was still stable. And at some kind of boarderline piont (after 45 minutes of prime 95 one core had an error) I just let it stay a little below.

So I overclocked my 8320 to 4,3 GHZ and it runs at max 52°C under full load.

I haven't really touched the voltages yet, but I think with a case fan, that blows on the heatsinks of the motherboard I can go way higher ... but the socet-temperature just bothered me a little bit (70°C).

But so far everything ran stable for about 10 hours with the furmark burn in test and prime 95 doing blend test.

No core failed and the gpu sits at about 70°.

Everything fine so far.

Only little problem I got is my cpu-cooler. It cools nice, but somehow its "hearable" ... and I don't like it.

Guess I'll switch to a Noctua DH14 or something like that.

Also a Thermaltake Siver Arrow with noctua-fans would be a option.

AAAAAAAAlso ... i could just switch the Fan on the Shadow Rock 2 with a Noctua NF-F12 ... guess I'll go that route.

I'll keep you guys updated with other stuff that comes to my mind regarding this rig.

So ... thill then :)
