Less known RPG's

With the recent release of the Bound by Flame trailer from Spider, I just thought that this will be a nice experience as a budget rpg since their last rpg, Mars: War Logs, had a wide creative scope but was just hampered by limited resources.

It also got me thinking about other low key rpg's that I assume some liked but didn't blow away the market like Final Fantasy or any other grand rpg.

So, TekSyndicate what rpg would you consider as low key but fun to play?

It's an old game, but my personal favorite is Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2.

The Last Remnant was excellent - think Final Fantasy by a different name - also done by squaresoft

I wouldn't say those are games that the marked missed but I would agree those games are definitely great rpg's

I saw some good feedback in the steam forum's but I worry that the pc port is unplayable.

Sorry to be the killjoy, but I thought that was a horribly generic trailer - bunch of heroes killing a bunch of very big strong looking baddies who really just fall like flies.

I don't know how if I can call it less known.

I do love the Shin-Megami-Tensei: Persona JRPGs. They really do focus on the stories a lot.

well if you were to ask average casual nerd they might not have heard of these

but they do have cult followings

  • wild arms
  • all of the "Ys" games
  • summon nights sword craft story
  • golden sun
  • megaman battle network
  • dragon warrior/qeust VII
  • star tropics
  • Persona 3/4 first 2 are dated and really hard to play/understand without a guide

these games I haven't played but I've heard nothing but good things

  • breath of fire
  • alundra
  • legend of mana
  • suikoden
  • valkarie profile
  • lunar silver star story
  • shinning force
  • disgaia
  • crystalis
  • ultima
  • Illusion of Gaia
  • xenogears/xenosaga
  • phantasy star

these range from games in the late 80's to modern day

i have only played the PC version - i had no issues at all

can you guys recommend me a story driven, character developing, adventure (linear is ok) final fantasy esk but not cheezy like they do

something dark and gridy like fallout franchise. but rpg core..anything from the dawn of time

i use emulators to achieve this

shin megami tensi: digital devil saga I think is one, I've only played the beginning but it seems pretty dark

you definitely have to check out Skies of Arcadia: Legends. it's a Dreamcast port/upgrade. It is so much fun. a ton of side stuff too. you are basically an air pirate who travels around via an air ship (which you can upgrade and collect a cast of like 30 crew). You fight normally, but also air ship battles! very bright, colorful, and tons of fun.

Weston! Come on over to the Lounge :)

Oh, nice to know that. I guess I'll give it a try then.

Well, their marketing team isn't actually stellar but the game will speak for itself on how great it is.

Coming from asia, that is definitely a big franchise for the hardcore. Never got around to playing them because we gave up on the early playstation 2 emulators. And other games just came around to take over our lives.

That is a nice list!

I can vouch for shining force, it is one of my favorites. As blasphemous as it may sound I don't like Zelda or Final Fantasy. Shining Force (Sega Genesis) and Baldur's Gate (PC) were my style. Almost forgot Master of Orion II (PC).

If you're looking for an RPG with most of those points I recommend checking out an old Ps1 game called Alundra. It's a very underrated game that gives you a real challenge and is really puzzle driven, you can check out some game play from early on in the game here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-QDhiAU8Hg

Hope you enjoy.
