With the recent release of the Bound by Flame trailer from Spider, I just thought that this will be a nice experience as a budget rpg since their last rpg, Mars: War Logs, had a wide creative scope but was just hampered by limited resources.
It also got me thinking about other low key rpg's that I assume some liked but didn't blow away the market like Final Fantasy or any other grand rpg.
So, TekSyndicate what rpg would you consider as low key but fun to play?
Sorry to be the killjoy, but I thought that was a horribly generic trailer - bunch of heroes killing a bunch of very big strong looking baddies who really just fall like flies.
you definitely have to check out Skies of Arcadia: Legends. it's a Dreamcast port/upgrade. It is so much fun. a ton of side stuff too. you are basically an air pirate who travels around via an air ship (which you can upgrade and collect a cast of like 30 crew). You fight normally, but also air ship battles! very bright, colorful, and tons of fun.
Coming from asia, that is definitely a big franchise for the hardcore. Never got around to playing them because we gave up on the early playstation 2 emulators. And other games just came around to take over our lives.
I can vouch for shining force, it is one of my favorites. As blasphemous as it may sound I don't like Zelda or Final Fantasy. Shining Force (Sega Genesis) and Baldur's Gate (PC) were my style. Almost forgot Master of Orion II (PC).
If you're looking for an RPG with most of those points I recommend checking out an old Ps1 game called Alundra. It's a very underrated game that gives you a real challenge and is really puzzle driven, you can check out some game play from early on in the game here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-QDhiAU8Hg
