Law Enforcement Appreciation Thread

Not sure if this is the right place for this post but I just wanted to throw up some love for all the cops out there that protect and serve their communities daily. A deputy in my county was shot yesterday after someone opened fire on our local police department’s building downtown and the sheriff’s department responded to the call. He’s stable but in critical condition in the hospital right now.

You guys have a tough job, (any cops on here? or family of cops? Totally unsure if this forum has any boys/girls in blue perusing the tech stuff hahaha) and I just wanted to express my support and gratitude for keeping our communities safe and secure in these troubling times. I think it’s important to remember the heroes even in the midst of villains.

This thread has the potential to be a shitshow. It’s a good and timely topic though, so while Staff will be keeping a close eye on it, we’re going to allow it.

It’s inevitable that this thread will have political discussion. So as long as people keep level heads and have discussion/debate in good faith, we’ll keep it open.

What does good faith mean? Glad you asked. A good faith discussion typically means that you’re trying to persuade the other person of your point of view in a reasonable fashion, while at the same time being open to the possibility that the other person knows something you do not. If everyone can keep this in mind while discussing, I think we’ll get along just fine.

Yeah man, I definitely appreciate this. Not LEO myself, but got family.

It’s grounding to remember that LEO are people too.

There are good cops for sure, its like the normal thing you do great all the time but get crushed that one time you fuck up.

Even the robo cops fuck up from time to time

Being a cop does not automatically grant hero status.
So what does?
Going into a situation that will likely harm you to save someone else without getting compensation…? ( I came up with that definition in about 30 seconds, so not a whole lot of thought put into it).
What’s your definition?
And back on topic…
Most cops are good cops. Unfortunately I’ve not had very many pleasant interactions with cops. Mostly my fault but even the ones without my fault were not pleasant. Once in my life I had a good interaction with a cop, and that was when they found some stuff stolen from me.

I think it doesn’t matter if you get compensation, but nonetheless, I’m inclined to agree with you on all of this.

I’ve had interactions from -10 to +9 when it comes to cops. The ones that were negative have almost always been my fault.

Each person is different and it’s the luck of the draw if you meet a happy cop or not.

I don’t think their mood should matter. As with any job you should be level headed and not let mood dictate how you interact with people. If anything it should go double when you wield the power the law and firearms.

I agree. Not all cops are heroes just like not all military, nurses, doctors, firefighters or teachers are heroes.

I agree on your definition of a hero, but I’d say the compensation is irrelevant. Can’t use that salary or pension if you dive on a grenade or take a bullet for someone right? And obviously it’s a rare person who would sacrifice like that for someone they don’t even know. I think it’s also heroic to simply be a positive force for good despite facing adversity. The Gandalf quote comes to mind here “I have found that it is the small everyday deed of ordinary folks that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love."

I’d also point out, any interaction with law enforcement will have a some small to large negative connotation, given the nature of the situations they’re involved in.

Stripping out all opinion, here are some things I’d like to state.

  • cops are people.
  • law enforcement is a job.
  • this job revolves around enforcing rules.
  • cops are people.

There’s an opt-in political category where you can share this stuff if you’d like.

We keep politics off the surface threads for one reason: some people can’t reasonably discuss politics. We give them the option to opt out because people have a tendency to get baited into discussions.

Opt in here:

New to the Forum found it through youtube recently. Its nice to see there is people willing to show support for LEO. My side job I am a commissioned officer with a small PD and handle all of their IT work. Granted the commission is more for legal CYA as it holds me to the employ guideline, but I do ride alongs and in unit training’s with the new officers when it comes to the E-Ticket and Reporting system

One of my best friends is a cop in a relatively rural part of America.

I believe like any job there are good and bad employees.

Read the bible and let the lord be your shepherd. Do not give into temptation. For I know it is hard not to give in. Know that it will make you a better man in the end and build great character.

Yep, this is the thing that people have a difficult time understanding.

The issue is that the stakes are high when it comes to LEO, so the bad ones are so much worse.
