Large companies like Sony using kickstarter/Early Access. Thoughts?

What are your thoughts on this every time I have read about it recently for Sony's studio's H1Z1 and the new title Senmue III it just doesn't feel right I always considered these services for startups.

Do you think large companies should be using services like Early Access and Kickstarter? Or do you think once a company has capital it should develop games internally without the assistance of the public like they have been since Atari.
Also do you think Early Access has effected the gaming job market negatively? (in your own experience working in gaming)
Do you trust Early access developers or kickstarter developers?

I have stopped buying games all together since no one seems to know how to release a game that is not broke as shit on release.

I did buy early access dayz it was fun but the more shit they added the worse it got, instead of fixing problems they seem to be focused on adding more things into the game that make it even worse to play.

A large company doing a kickstart fuck that shit, better be a cheaper game when released.

IMO large companies should GTFO off the platform, and anyone who funds them is a bloody idiot. Maybe a bit bluntly said, but honestly there are no excuses for that kind of business model.

The thing I hate about Dayz is I logged 190 hours and really never did anything I just waited for that Mr. Moon moment for 190 hours. 100 hours of that was travel time or trying to get enough gear to defend myself always getting KOSed by snipers. The game would have been so much better if they limited the gun ranges to 100-200m. I had the same character for over 40 hours but that was only because I was in the north the whole time walking trying to find survivor players. Sorry to get off topic but as a lover of the concept i needed to vent with my fellow dayz purchaser.

Me and you wouldn't get along as i was one of the kos guys, I and my buddy also steam sniped people. We didn't hack but we were general asshats. We were very good at finding steamers who thought they were hidden from people like us, it is incredibly easy to find them. Some are hidden well but make mistake, and others are not possible to stream snipe. Generally we only did it to the ones that were acting like assholes or were people we "felt" deserved to be shot/knocked out/held up.

Why? Because we could. Because it was easy, Because what else is there to do in dayz when it was released.

Dayz is trying to be a hardcore realistic survival game to which limiting the guns like that instantly breaks it. I believe they do need some way to save your gear some type of storage that can never be lost even thew maintenance windows like holy shit i found x item let me put that in the storage, but this does break their vision of hardcore survival.

I haven't played it since they added the insane weapon sway when you are tired, you literally cant defend yourself from being shot at after traveling into a new city, even if you rest outside soon as you run into the city the sway comes back.

While I think there is some validity to what you guy's are saying, I would like to point out something.

No editor right in his mind would edit Shenmue 3, they've always thought it was just a fad and nobody actually cared about it to the point that they would buy it. The game Shenmue 1 did comercially okay, not as expected but borderline okay, but after Shenmue 2, everything was against them: the PS2 was released, and the dreamcast died...
When the guy's from the marketing team or the "social research group" tell their superiors that if they would edit that Shenmue 3 they would all sleep in rotating beds the CEO tells them:

"What you say?! Make a Shenmue III, what's a Shenmue ? That game that floped two times in a row ? Why would I throw my money in the air when I can promote the new Call Of Duty and sleep in a golden plated rotating bed myself ?!"

So the game stayed in the mind of a few until the interwebs exploded and people started to make videos and all that. Before that (at release date) the critics didn't really enjoyed Shenmue and didn't rate it as "The best game ever made".

I also don't mind big companies making kickstarters, the guy's who are making Star Citizen now have enough money to make the game. It doesn't stop them to accept donations and charge the hell out for ships, strangely no body ever said a thing about it because... it's Star Citizen why would you say a thing about Star Citizen ?!

A bit hypocritic maybe ?

Shenmue III is basically the equivalent of Half-Life 3 for console gamers and anyone that has played it.
Wouldn't you like to have an HL-3 kickstarter ?
Also, if potato gamers can do it we can too:
half life 3 confirmed!!

We would get along fine as long as your not one of those racist nut cases that flock to that game and chase black and asian avatars screaming racial slurs. Sorry forgot to mention the last 40 hours were spent in my underwear recuiting members for the freshie spawn mafia you can accomplish alot with 20 players in their underwear with axes :)

Good response Im swaying between your points and my opinions nice job.

nawh nothing like that.

But man we saw some shit. lol if only i had recorded it. like one time we had like 15 people on top of some oil tank all in underwear and they were fist fighting, man we opened up on them shit hit the fan people laying down, some just jumped off. One guy came up to us and layed next to us, and watched us shoot the ones that came back to there "arena" was good day.

anyways back on topic lol

As for star citizen were they a big company before that? IDK i don't follow stupid games "please don't hit me"

i only hit people who need re spawns :)

I have to ask. Why is sony begging for money to make a game?

I assuming its to lower the risk of their investment. Its all about the $$$. How to save more and make more $$$. Happy board members = bonus checks.

Depends. If it is a 3rd party studio that only gets part of their budget from Sony exclusivity then it makes sense. Thats the Shenmue case I think.

If it is a studio actually owned by Sony (or any other big cooperation) they can go screw themselves. I would never back sth like this.

Crowdfunding is to enable developers that do not have the capital to make what they and their audience wants, while still keeping creative control. It is not for big companies to reduce their investment risk.

I think the thing with Shenmue 3 is that they probably had to turn to kickstarter in order for the game to be made period. Remember that shareholders won't sign off on something that won't sell tens of millions of copies, so in order for these "risky" propositions to get off the ground, they probably have to turn to crowdsourcing to get the money to make the game.

good response

Exactly.

Added to that Sony is still in debt thanks to the PlayStation 3 followed by the recession it hadn't turned a profit in years so they aren't in a position to take huge risks, even now, though they take bigger ones than the other consoles.

We should also remember that the first Shenmue cost $70 million to make and was a commercial failure only moving 1.2 million units. While the second game was cheaper to develop but was still considered a commercial failure. When you have an IP with a track record of costing money rather than making profit, I don't think any shareholder would sign off on a risk like that

I think it's completely fine for corporations to use crowdfunding. It allows corporations to try more interesting products since they don't have to spend millions (billions?) of dollars in development to find out if anyone actually wants it. Crowdfunding is an extremely efficient way to find out what the market wants. It also means that we as consumers get more products we want :)

  • earthquake, nuclear disaster

To me KickStarter and Early Access was for companies that needed the funding in a big way and so no I do not like large companies like Sony using it. Hopefully people will use their heads and realize how ridiculous it is that companies like Sony are doing this and don't back them.
