Laptop Overheating

Dear Logan,

I have a hp pavilion dv2807nr laptop that overheats with light use( The cpu right now is at 160F). I took apart the laptop to see if it was loaded up with dust and it was fairly clean. I am sick of having my leg burnt and do not know how to fix this issue. Any thoughts?

You may have some luck with copper shims but first get artic silver thermal paste and replace any thermal pads and paste with it then get a new fan and heatsink for it  http://www.amazon.com/431851001-Heatsink-Pavilion-Presario-431851-001/dp/B004R9MMOW/

check to see if your fan is actually spinning. that is a very common issue

even more likely it is the gpu, in that case get some longer screws for the heatsink, and copper shims. these things have gpu problems very similar to the xbox 360

I have a year old tube of artic silver in my tool box. Is that still good? The fan is spinning, it sounds like a hair dryer.

yes it should be good. clean the old paste off thoroughly and apply the artic silver. if that doesn't help much you need copper shims

I am having trouble with this one cable, any technics that I could use?

if its a ribbon , make shure its flap is flipped up. make shure theres nothing holding it

The ribbons conectors on this laptop have 2 things on each side that you push out on each side to losen it. It is a standard connector for the motherboard I think.

Make sure it's not filled with dust. Do you use your computeri n bed a lot? Beds are deathtraps for laptops.

I took apart the laptop to see if it was loaded up with dust and it was fairly clean.    ---- exactly what he said

do you plug him in when you use it? cause maybe it could be your battery overheating?

How hot does it actually get? 160F is not uncommon for a laptop. My old HP laptop regularly hit 182F while on any sort of load whatsoever. Then when I got my Asus G72 it would hit a few degrees higher (194F). If your CPU temps are staying under 195 then there probably isn't anything wrong with it.

There was a blue thermal pad on the gpu and Some crappy looking thermal paste on the CPU. I cleaned both surfaces       and put artic silver on. Is there any way I can test to see if everything is working and I did not break anything?

The air coming out of the laptop is cooler and the fan is not always on full blast but the cpu right now it at 171F. I followed there guide on how to apply thermal paste so i'm 99% sure that it is on correctly.

Mods move this to the cooling section. This is not an inbox question.

I think some of the magic came out, It hit 200F
