Laptop or Tablet

So I am thinking of getting a Laptop ("Asus K55VD") for University. but I may be going to a specialized school in half a year or so and if I go there I don't need a laptop because they supply one. So my question is should I spend 800 - 1000$ on a laptop now or 400$ on a tablet for taking notes and have a fun gadget tell I know whether I'm going to the different school.

Laptop: Asus K55VD

              vs.

Tablet: Asus Transformer with keyboard dock

I need it for taking notes and media.

On the one hand, if you are certain of going to that school and get the laptop for free I would consider a tablet for the time being. The prime and infinity tablets from Asus by the looks of it (no experience of my own) are very nice and can be used productively (and you safe some cash). Although you don't get a complete office suite (unless you pay for it and then still it is not as elaborate as on a regular pc) so if you need to write papers I would still resort to a pc for that. But you can always resort to the tablet when you don't really need the laptop, which is nice if it will be a 15 or even a 17 inch monster...

On the other hand, if you have to pay for the laptop then why not get a suitable laptop now that you can use when you go the that specialized school.

the one that doesn't have windows 8 on it

Having your OWN laptop is always a good thing, personally, tablet are just secondary gear for me, it goes like this for me:

1st  Desktop: for most of the work

2nd Not all time i'm home to use desktop and this is the best way, usability wise

3rd Only use for SOME things on the go like watching movies, reading manga or ebook and browsing net, or android games

there you have it. I'll go for laptop, you can cange os, play games, do productive stuff,.

Being a power user has alays been a big thing for me but as tablets do start to get better the lines do blur. As of right now I'd have to say get a laptop just because its able to actually connect with other usb devices and the fact that it has alot more power.

All the advice is great and I apreseate it. I am now leaning more twords the laptop. But I think I'm going to wait a few more months tell I sbmit my aplication to the school.

one to see if I get in

two to see what the next gen of tablets will bring, there are some cool laptops coming out and some desktops that are tablets and i5 computers.

So I'm going to wait but thanks all for the advice you help me alot to make up my mind.

You could always get a convertible. Wacom based ones are the best.  Examples are HP 2740p, 2760p, Lenovo X201, X220, X230 and Fujitsu T730, T731, T901, T902
