I have some questions about laptop graphics. a couple of years ago, I dissasembled a laptop to replace a broken fan. I took out just about everything, including the graphics card. so this got me thinking, is it possible to buy a laptop graphicscard from somewhere? propable not from a normal retailer, but there are some online stores out there selling laptop parts. does anyone know of any?
another thing? do laptop graphics card all have the same shape?
Yes, as I mentioned earlier, I disasembled a laptop before, so I know how horrible it is.
also, each laptop is assembled in a different way. there are dissasembly manuals out there though. I think the worst thing are those tiny connectors you'll encounter.
I am seriously starting to concider doing this. maybe not right away, but later. my gtx 560m isn't giving me the best fps on farcry 3 (I don't wan't to go to low on the graphics settings) and even though 990 USD isn't very cheap, it's cheaper than buying a new gaming laptop.
for me to do this, there has to be a good dissasembly manual out there, and picking apart the laptop has to be relatively easy. (and I do say relativly)
I'm guessing a Toshiba qosmio x770 should be somewhat easier to dissasemble than one those compact ones.
part of the problem is, if you get a laptop with a shitty dedicated card, the cooling will be good enough for THAT card, no guerentee you can stick osmething bad ass in there and have it actually run.
I wouldn't call it shitty. afterall, it is a GTX (not the best GTX though). I could tolerate a bit higher temperatures. there are probably some info out there on how the cards compare in terms of temperature, and what the max recomended is.
I looked at some benchmarks for GTX 680 and GTX 560. the GTX 680 has better thermal properties than the GTX 560. (I assume this also applies to the mobile versions) So I don't thin heat would be a problem.
