I have an old Samsung R700 that i wanna upgrade a bit just for kicks. im not too savvy when it comes to GPU’s in laptops though in terms of upgrading. its currently has a NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT - 256 MB but like all of us i want MORE POWER. im already looking for a Core 2 Extreme X7900 to swap out the Core 2 Duo T5750 just to see if it melts or anything. but like i say im a novice when it comes to upgrading laptops and not just fixing them.
I have not looked up your model, but I am save to say that the GPU is soldered to the motherboard. Even the CPU might not be on a socket.
But from that video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_VI4izmMls&t=5m40s it looks that it certainly is soldered on.
hmm thats weird, looked it up and read in loads of places that it wasnt, im gonna have to tear it open i reckon.
Ok, so another video from hungary this time:
The CPU is socketed, but the GPU deffinitely is not. Its one of the two chips on the smaller heatpipe; the other one is the Chipset is suppose.
arrr that sucks. nevermind
There are realy realy realy realy little laptops that actually feature excangable GPUs; Some alienware and other "gaming" branded ones do.
But for the majority the GPU is soldered on, and as of today even 99% of the CPUs are - intel even stopped to supply many of the laptop oriented CPUs in a socket compatible package.
No, the dream is dead... let me mourn
Only things I could nail down was it being a Socket P Merom, later models got an upgrade to penryn and nothing about if they where interchangeable and only upgrade post I find they got a new laptop or computer or didn't go through with it. Actual upgrades where along the lines of SSD main drive and a HDD to replace the DVD and used for a cache, /tmp swap drive with linux for a web/email type rig.
you can replace your wifi card with a egpu adapter. which will give you a 60+% boost but obviosly I'd avoid getting a gpu over a nvidia gtx 950 anything higher would face too big a bottleneck from your old cpu and limited pci bandwidth.
im just gonna scrap the idea and stick to my rig
You can pick up an Asus G50V for 60 bucks and it has a standardized socket for the GPU. I think the last one for that socket is like a GTS 210 and I have been looking for one.
