I was wondering if it would be possible to upgrade my MSI Stealth's GeForce 765M to a 770 or possibly even a 780? I know laptops are primarily made for the parts they come with, but I'm thinking of taking out the card, selling it, and using that money plus a little more to buy the 770 in place of it. If this is possible, I don't know, which is why I am utilizing this awesome forum :)
In short. No. Longer? No unless there is an otherwise identical laptop that has said GPU you want to upgrade to so you can search the internet for it, find it probably some very high price, dismantle your current laptop (which mind you can be a proper b**** in some cases), then remove the existing one, plug in the replacement, and use existing cooling for it. Desktop graphics cards are completely different and also selling a laptop one may be hard because I assume there are only so many people in the market for said Laptop GPU. Only other way this would be possible is with an external GPU and I'm fairly certain those stopped being a thing a while ago.
The best I can tell you is that it might be possible. Given the relatively recent advent of that model, and the fact that most people will just spec a laptop to what they want, there are too few repair/disassembly links for that laptop. So I can't actually tell you whether or not the GPU is integrated or on a separate mPCI-e card. For that, you'd have to actually take the laptop apart; which, if you don't know what exactly you are doing, is quite the chore. If it is removable, you need to check it's size and shape, TDP and the maximum supported card for that laptop, since they don't frequently change the motherboard or battery or power management between setups. So if they sold one with a 770m or a 780m, then it is likely, if the board is replaceable, that the stock 770m or 780m will work in it. Expect to have the 780m clocked lower than expected, as its TDP is massive compared to the 765m.
