Cousin is wanting to buy a laptop just for general use but doesn't really want to spend any more than 'a few hundred' so I'm guessing in the £300 range, that's about $450.
She only really wants it for word processing/Web browsing/Facebook etc. so nothing too intensive will be fine,
Thanks.
Its entirely possible.

for example.
400-500 usd is the sweet spot for most notebooks.

I recommend against HP and Dell Laptops...Look for an Acer or Asus.
HP is just fine, asus and acer are preffered though.
without getting a laptop i don't see how ya can get a notebook unless you get one used...
meant to say netook instaed of laptop sorry >.<
youre serious?, i know things cost more in britain, but 450 bucks is PLENTY for a laptop

dude buy a decent netbook, hp make nice ones with a nice screen (led backlit)
cheapest laptop in ireland would usually go for around €400 which would be about £350 at a guess so i'm just basing that on my openion
Them HP Probooks are good for work, business, and study.
Or if you want 10.1" with a Nvidia ION: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220851
