Laptop CPU Upgrade

Hey everyone. I would like to upgrade my AMD v120 mobile processor. I have found this CPU that has the same socket as the one I have and it isn't very expensive. In fact its downright cheap. But it will be a major upgrade over what I have. I have a few concerns though. Once I tried to swap out a WiFi card with one from my brothers laptop and mine threw a fit when I tried. It wouldn't even boot. Would the same thing happen? And also, I know the socket is compatible but is there anything else I would need to worry about?

CPU. I want a quad core but I couldn't find one this cheap.

My laptop. The RAM has been upgraded to 1333 4x2GB sticks from Kingston. The HDD crashed and has been replaced with a 500GB version.

HP (and Compaq) will blacklist certain different parts to force the end user to buy replacements directly from HP. This is why your machine failed to boot with a different wireless card.

The CPU is a different matter. If the CPU is listed as supported in conjunction with both the chipset and socket, then you can make the swap without any trouble.

Realistically in this situation you need to go for clock speed over core count. You aren't going to gain any performance with a slow CPU that has more cores, simply because each operation will take longer.

This CPU (Phenom II X2 N640) has more L2 Cache on the die, is 1GHz faster, and supports DDR3-1333 natively. Despite missing that third core, the speed in all applications is faster. This is the third fastest officially supported CPU for this laptop.

Thanks for helping me so much lately fouquin. But how do I know if the chipset is also compatible? Should it say somewhere?

Well since Compaq is terrible at listing this anywhere, we're going to have to assume that since the CPUs are the same socket, architecture, and platform, the Phenom II X2 will work.

The only differences between the two that could cause any issues at all are the TDP and HT Link speeds. Neither of these would cause the machine to not boot, but they will definitely make it run warmer.

Check the bottom of your CQ62 to be sure it has ventilation under the fan, as some models relied on air to pass through the keyboard instead of from a vent in the bottom.

Just wanted to say that I swapped the Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 in my HP dv5 for a T9800 (that I found on ebay for like $40) and I couldn't be happier. Plus I got to replace the crappy factory applied paste with some Arctic Silver, and give the radiator and board a thorough dust cleaning. I highly recommend doing this to anybody with an older laptop provided you have at least some experience pulling apart electronics. At least do little research to see what sort of upgrade you can make and for what cost. My machine is 5 years old now and I am still very pleased with its performance.

It is important to note that upgrading the CPU on a CQ62 requires removing the entire motherboard. I highly recommend you find a full teardown guide and follow it, because you're going to get to the CPU and have about 50 screws, the top case, the speakers, the keyboard, the power jack, the right side USB, the LCD, and optical all disconnected. Replacing the CPU on one of those laptops literally requires you take the whole thing apart.

I have already taken it apart before to fix the screen issue that i'm sure you are aware of because you helped me in my other post. But I have never taken out the motherboard. I did watch a tear down and after you get to the point where I have taken it apart there are only about 3 more screws to take out and the motherboard is free. Thanks for all the help.

One more thing. While I've got the thing apart is there any way I could put a more powerful fan in it? I have looked around before and it doesn't seem like you can just find a more powerful fan and put it in. The only thing you can get is a replacement.

I haven't seen official fan upgrades, just what people can do with modding (like taking the fan from a Radeon HD 4850 and hotwiring it in) so there isn't a whole lot to do about that. It shouldn't crash from overheating, so don't worry too much.

Alright. The cpu and Arctic silver have been ordered. Thanks for the help.
