I'm about to host a QuakeLive lan party and I need to buy networking equipment to get everything hooked up. All the computers have to be able to access the internet because QuakeLive doesn't have locally hosted server. Should I buy switches like this http://smile.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-SG1008D-1000Mbps-Switching-Capacity/dp/B001EVGIYG/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1415490609&sr=1-5&keywords=8+port+router or routers like this http://smile.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-R860-Advanced-8-Port-Router/dp/B003CFATSS/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1415490609&sr=1-1&keywords=8+port+router Due to space everybody will be in two seperate rooms so I need to run an ethernet cable 100 feet from my router in the basement to the living room then 25 feet from either a switch or router in the living room to my kitchen to another switch or hub. If necessary I can run 2 100 feet cables.
Switches are the easiest solution, due to their plug and play style. Routers will require you to configure them into either multiple subnets or just one whilst passing DHCP,DNS etc info from the main one.
You maybe better off to get a single 24port or 48 port switch off of ebay, but if you have to have people in multiple rooms then several smaller switches is a better idea.
I was able to borrow a 48 port HP procurve switch from a neighbor and I picked up a 25ft Cat5e cable and a cheap as chips TP-Link 8 port switch off amazon for the second set of tables in the kitchen.
