Can anyone give me some basic information about swtiches, ive looked up some but the numbers look like "some kind of elvish i cannot read" :D. 

and maybe some recommendation for switches (5-10 1Gigabit ports).

used for lan gaming with my friends as stated in the title.

Basically, a switch phisically connects a bunch of computers to a network and that network is your LAN (local area network). So anything that says network switch is good for lan gaming
