My job requires lots of desktop space and I wanted to buy 2 4K monitors to use with the work laptop. The problem is I have no place to put the laptop, let alone two large monitors. I sometimes work from the coffee table
Anyway, I thought of throwing away the aged monitors of my desktop, putting the 4K monitors there and use them with both the desktop and the laptop with a KVM switch. What I read on the internet is that L1T KVM is the minimum and everything else is basically waste of money. Problem with L1T KVM is the price. I have total of 1k$, and I don’t think it’s smart to spend half of it on the KVM switch.
People who used KVM switches, what is your experience?
I need to figure out a better KVM solution myself (its why I just came to the forums and I saw your post).
I recently bought a Beelink Ser6 Pro that I’m using for Linux and I have my old Windows desktop for Windows stuff. I’m sharing the monitor, keyboard, mouse and wireless headset (Logitech Pro X Wireless) with a KVM.
I bought this thing from Amazon:
And it worked great until the second day of ownership, at which point I realized it breaks after my computers go to sleep. When I woke up the next day it started rapidly trying to switch the monitor back and forth. I had to unplug everything and reboot both machines… So, now I’m looking for another one.
I feel like the one I have is almost perfect, some programming error. It’s 50 bucks and can do 4K at 120hz. I know you’re using two monitors (and mine is for one), but clearly this tech can be done relatively cheaply.
If anyone has some recommendations here I’d love it. I don’t want to just keep buying them until I find one that works.
When COVID hit and I started working from home, I bought the cheapest KVM I could find on Amazon. It actually worked ok until I replaced my monitor with a slightly newer one of the exact same model. Then I started having all kinds of issues with it. Doing research for replacements lead me to L1T. Even though it was expensive, the L1T KVM has been flawless in the same configuration the cheap Amazon one failed in, so it’s been worth every penny for me. Wish I had known about L1T when I bought the first one as work paid for that one, but I paid for the L1T out of my own pocket.
The reality really is that L1T’s are the best out there, if it’s something you think you’ll use for a long time, I’d say it’s definitely worth the cash.
At least that is how I always think of tech purchases, get the best I can because I don’t wanna replace it for a long time if I can help it.
