I recently upgraded to a powercolor 7900 XTX Hellhound, but it doesn’t have USB C displayport alt mode. I can’t find any documentation online of which displayport has dp alt mode.
Would this work with my existing bidirectional USB C cable (it worked with my USB C switch and RTX 2070)
My monitor is a Dell U4320Q (4K 60 HZ). Here’s how I would connect it
Desktop displayport + USB - > l1 USB C combiner - > 10ft bidirectional USB C cable → USB C switch - > USB C input of Dell U4320Q
I have my keyboard, mouse, and audio interface connected to the monitor’s USB C inputs. I need to send video to the display and inputs to the desktop.
It just depends on if the USBC cable you already have is both display & data capable. The USBC combiner does come with a USBC cable though, so you will have something if your existing cable is not compatible.
We usually use Moshi cables at the office because they’re the bomb for USB-C → DP, and I see on their website that the cables we usually use are bi-directional compatible:
“Connect your DisplayPort computer to a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) monitor. (Bi-directional support*)*For bi-directional support, please check with the monitor manufacturer to ensure the monitor accepts a DisplayPort signal over USB-C (UFP_D pin assignment E).”
Makes sense. It’s pretty hard to find long 10ft cables (I guess due to length causing integrity issues, so I’m thinking of looking for a bidirectional dp - > usb c adapter so that I can use my existing long usb c cable.
Does the 7900xtx hellhound’s DP 2.1 support alt mode on all ports? How would I find the info? Searching 7900xtx hellhound displayport alt/mode doesn’t yield any relevant results.
Heck even the product page doesn’t say
Standard Display Connectors
1 x HDMI 2.1,3 x DisplayPort 2.1 (only 2x simultaneous DP2.1 connections can be supported)
The Combiner is for PCs that do not support DP ALT mode. DP ALT mode is just a USBC port that can send out a DP signal. So the moshi cable I linked, for instance, is supposed to be plugged into a USBC port that supports DP ALT mode → into DP port on KVM
