1.4 Display Port KVM Switch - Quad Monitor - Four Computer — Level1Techs Store
USB Interface (5-gigabit or 10-gigbit):
10-gigbit
Problem:
When I go to plug this into any of the USB-C ports on my Windows 11 desktop machine, I get the following error:
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)
The USB hub failed to reset.
The displays work, however. The net effect is nothing plugged into the KVM via USB will work on the machine.
Would you all happen to know of possible causes for this? I have tested the USB-C ports with a pair of headphones and they work, so I am confident the ports are working.
Also if it is of interest, the motherboard is a MSI Z790 Edge Wifi.
There is a Macbook Pro also plugged into this KVM using the same manufacturer of USB C cable (UGREEN), which works for it.
Thanks for the quick response! Unfortunately, I get the same error with such a cable.
Any other thoughts? I have already updated all of the MSI drivers per their MSI Center and have updated the BIOS through it as well, though still same issue.
Windows in the device manager after selecting “Driver Details” on the USB device states “No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device.” This was also the case with the USB-C cable. However, the above-mentioned MSI Center does not detect any drivers to update.
Also, though perhaps not a full-fledged USB dock, I have used a small 4-way USB-C dock by UGREEN in one of the USB-C ports and that can successfully drive my pair of headphones.
So I made two changes and it appears to work now, thanks! The two changes were: I first did as you said and turned the KVM off for 1 min. I then, before reconnecting, changed the cable to be a single USB-C 10 Gbps UGREEN cable (previously I had one such cable and two USB-C UGREEN extension cables). The error cleared and my mouse and keyboard connected to the KVM began to work without error!
I played around a little bit and believe I have isolated it to a cable configuration issue. If I run the 10 Gpbs cable (male on both ends) with two of the UGREEN USB-C extension cables (female on one end, male on the other), then I get the same error; if I run the 10 Gpbs cable with just one of the USB-C extension cables (and seemingly regardless of which order from the KVM), then it also works. For whatever reason, running two of these extension cables with the 10 Gpbs appears to be a setup that does not permit the USB to work.
Thanks again, and it looks like I have path forward to using the KVM fully with my PC!
