KVM - Display Port signal Drop issue at 4k 120hz

KVM Model:

4 computer/ dual monitor DP 1.4

USB Interface (5-gigabit or 10-gigbit):

5-gigabit

Problem:

I have had this KVM for over 2 years and love it! I was using 1440p without issue across multiple computers and a dock. I recently was gifted an Asus PG42U 4k OLED monitor. I set it to 4k HDR 120hz and everything was working great at first then the display started cutting out or just going “No Signal” until I replugged the display port cable from the computer at the kvm. That fix is short lived and I have to repeat it again.
My video card is an Asus 4090. No other computer has this issue, but they are 60hz. So I suspect a bandwidth issue or signal degradation, but I’m not sure anymore with my attempted troubleshooting.

Other Notes:

I have tried multiple cables to resolve this, both in pairs(Computer->KVM and KVM->PG42U) listed below:

Club3d 8k 3.3 and 6.6 (no signal period). These were the ones I used for 1440p

Fibbr 5ft copper (pair) (signal and 120hz, but signal drops)

Fibbr fiber optic 5m (pair). (Source and display ends are correct). No signal on port 1,2, or 4 of KVM. Port 3 works, but signal drops after gaming for 30 minutes. Then replug as above, but doesn’t always work

I’ve tested both the top and bottom ports of the KVM while keeping them in the “rows” and still no luck.
I’ve tried a repeater as well to no avail. I’m currently using a hdmi cable and have not had any issues. Direct display port from the computer to the monitor works as well. I’m at a loss trying to wrap my head around it. Haha.

I was about to pick up a 10g same model KVM to see if that would work, but wanted to check if anyone had this issue first. Thank you in advance!

Hmm this does seem to be a bandwidth issue… the fiber optic cables not working are very strange.

First and foremost, disconnect everything and let the KVM sit for several minutes. Plug all of the cables back in, with the power cable being last. This will force the KVM and monitor to try and handshake again.

@wendell what do you think?

the Asus monitor gets into a weird state sometimes. unplug the dp and power cable from the monitor for about 2-3 mins and then pig back in. wouldn’t hurt to do the kvm the same way at the same time

if you have the “auto search” osd feature on the display turned on id recommend turning it off

Thank you for your quick response Amber and Wendell. I unplugged everything from the KVM and unplugged the monitor for 10 minutes then plugged everything back in. My mini PC and HP Dock work fine as usual. On my gaming PC, i can see the BIOS Asus splash screen, then it goes to “Display Port: No Signal” on Port 1.

No problem  thank you for reaching out. Are the same behaviors happening if you switch the Asus to monitor port 2 instead?

Unforunately, yes. Putting my gaming PC on port 1,2, or 4 result in no signal. Port 3 works briefly then still cuts by the time I am at the windows logon screen. I tried the Monitor 1 and 2 display ports for Port 1 and the output indidivually in tandem just to see if something would happen.

I did move ahead order the 10-gig version of this KVM this morning. My buddy needs a KVM and really wanted a level 1 one after seeing mine in action. He doesn’t use 4K, so it should work great with his setup. I am not sure if this will fix the issue I am having, it could be the cables or my computer. I will report back when I get it in.

Received the new 10 gig model and everything is working as expected. I have had zero cutouts at 4K 120hz or 138zh using the same cables over the past 4 days. Not sure exactly what the cause was, but so glad it is working as expected. Thank you again!
