Keyboard vs gamepad

Hi everyone I am a brand new pc gamer and i was wondering what were some opinions of the gamepad vs keyboard debate and should i pick up a gamepad next timei go to best buy.....

THANKS!!!!!

I guess it comes down to what games you plan on playing......?

By the verture of its form factor, the keypad and mouse is always going to be more nimble and customisable. but gamepads have a place, especially for two player game and things like driving games.

Where your PC is will make a difference too, my PC in the front room has pads as I tend to play arcade style games/console emulators with friends. Then my PC in the workshop I use games like RPGs/combat sims where the pad is not really suited.

(.....I remember when 2 player meant 2 players in the same room!)

It depends on the game I am playing if I will use a KB and mouse or a controller, for a FPS I like a keyboard and mouse because I can aim better, for other games like Sonic, Batman, or Assassin's Creed I like a controller

thank you so much for the info and i will really btake it to heart

It is all about preference.

I like to play most of my games with Keyboard and Mouse, but that is often Real-time strategy, First person shooters and Turn based strategy.

When I play games like 2d platformers i often use my old SEGA genesis (I am from Denmark so the SEGA was called a SEGA mega drive II) controller from way back (using a serial to usb cable).

I general my advice would be to try the games on different input devices and see which will be the most fun. Maybe even try to fix up a kinect if you have that. It is also fun to try to make things work in different ways.

Mouse and keyboard are always going to be more precise and necessary for First Person Shooters, MMOs, RTS games, MOBAs, etc. But a lot of the time I find myself reaching for my Xbox 360 controller for racing games, platformers, and any time I'm using an emulator. I also have a Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X Flight Stick for my space sims. I just really like to use whatever controller suits the game best.

You'll be fine with just mouse and keyboard but if you want to have a little more precise control in racing games, platformers and such, it might be worth it to pick up a controller.

for my mmo's i have a g13 gamepad dor my racing games i have a 360 remote for my flight games i have the ace combat 6 flight sticks :) great buy at the time love them to death. for first person shooters i use my keyboard and mouse.  its all personal prefrance. i love having many solutions plus its fun to play older games with new controll methods. i have used my flight sticks for ps1 emulator once was a blast playing games with a new set of controls. if you have the cash get many different options if not slow buy the ones that you think you will use the most.

I've always found myself a bit of a minimalist when it comes to these things. I don't like a cluttered desk or switching between keyboard and controllers when going in and out of games for menus, settings, ect.

Recently I've totally ditched my wireless 360 controller in favor of a good gaming mouse and mechanical keyboard. I agree there are just some games that don't work well with a keyboard, for example racing sims. But I find the joystick on a game pad too small of a movement to get enough accuracy that is needed for driving. If you're really into driving sims, I'd say look at some good racing wheels. If you're into flight sims, look at good flight sticks.

FPS, RPG, MMO, RTS are a perfect match for gaming keyboards and mice. I'd say get a decent keyboard and mouse because you'll need that anyway, and wait till you REALLY NEED a game pad before you get one. That way you also know what features you'll want.

Either way, That's just my opinion, but as I said, I'm weird OCD minimalist when it comes to my workspace but I'm always looking for ways to improve my PC gaming experience :P

Keyboard and mouse for FPS games

Game pad for third person, and racing games, even do i play racing games with keyboard. that's hardcore and a major finger pain xD.

Strategy, FPS = Keyboard definetly

Things like Racing, platforming = Could go either way depending on the game really

Fighting games = 100% controller no doubt.
