So I have a GTX 970 and recently decided to update my system. The current Fedora kernel available is 4.8.8. I typically install the driver the old fashion way
I would highly suggest using the nvidia-driver from negativo17, it works far better than the manual method.. thats like the dark ages :/ you poor person :P
Yes it's a known issue that it takes a while for nVidia to patch their kernel modules for newer kernels.
There is no solution, if the kernel modules do not work, you can't do anything because they are proprietary.
You can either use a modern kernel with the open source reverse engineered KMS driver called nouveau, or you can opt for an older kernel (kernel 4.4 is still very well maintained) with the binary blobs.
I did the negativo17 install about 2 months ago, I had some issues with video/images not rendering properly or being latent at times. Believe it or not, the stone age way just works (with kernel 4.5.x and under) Sure the negativo17 install are easy but I couldn't do with high res photos not rendering in my collection, or forwarding high res videos crashing the system. That became very annoying. I don't have those problems this way. :)
I know for a fact they work in at least 4.7.* so long as you use supported repositories. The drivers (375.20) even work with the latest X in F25. i don't believe there are any current issues with the nvidia drivers in 4.8.8
I don't know, I only use nouveau on the one single nVidia equipped system I have left, but in this case, since 4.4 is so well supported, and the biggest benefit of more bleeding edge kernels is for AMD systems, the easiest solution is most probably to just pick a distro on 4.4. Something that is vanilla like Fedora? KDE Neon for instance, they are on Ubuntu LTS main, so 4.4.
vlc crashed if I used vdpau and tried to forward the video, I tried different encoding options and formats. Now for viewing photos, they are high resolution and typically in the +3.5MB range on average. I do get the 30+MP range but I (unwillingly) use Adobe CS6 Bridge in a VM to handle those projects. What do you use to view/preview images ?
I just have Gnome, open nautilus/files and browse the folders. with the negativo17 installed pics would'nt render if they were over 2MB in size. THAT IS ANNOYING ! with the ol' fashion way, only 1 or 2 don't render.
Sorry but that is not an option, I have come to love the package manager and other things about Fedora. I was on Mint before I was on Fedora...
