Just started using Linux

Hello!

About a week ago I install ubuntu 15.04 gnome on my computer I mainly use to play game on. The problem is most of my game are windows based and do not support linux. My question is what is the best software to use to play windows games on linux? I've heard of "wine" and "Playonlinux" but to be honest I'm just lost. Any help would be great!

Thanks!

OK, well first things first, you are gonna wanna go with play on linux or crossover.

Play on linux is free and mostly idiot proof, while crossover does cost money, but it is completely idiot proof.

Just google how to install either application on ubuntu, and you should get a list of instructions.

Once you have either program, it will give you a gui to install what ever game you want.

Thanks for the fast reply!

To break it down really simple, PlayOnLinux is a front-end to Wine. Wine is a Windows emulator for Linux (might be BSD too?), but can be tricky to optimise. You'll probably hear that X reportedly worked best with Wine version Y with settings Z - that's where PlayOnLinux makes things easier, you can specify what version of Wine and settings to use for a specific application and POL will handle it for you.

However not every application will work with Wine, or work flawlessly. For example I tried getting Skyrim working, and I followed a step-by-step tutorial made by someone who got a steady 60 FPS, but I ended up getting a mere 1-5 FPS.

Another solution to getting Windows applications on Linux is... running Windows on Linux through virtualisation. There's a topic that very quickly goes through how you can get good performance out of a virtual Windows machine on Linux (I haven't tried it out myself, but the author says it performs well so I'll take his/her word for it) here

Instead of league you can play dota.
