Just finished first build, won't post

Just finished my first build. When I hit the power button, all the fans do about a half a turn and the LEDs light up for just a second, and then it shuts off. Any ideas what's wrong?

i had the same happen and it turned out my mobo was damaged in shipping, check to make sure nothings shorting, test it out of the case,  and test the components individually if you can, what mobo and cpu are you using ?

Gigabyte Z77X-D3H mobo and 3570K

I really hope it's not the mobo.  I bought that thing nearly 4 months ago and then had a financial delay before I could buy the rest of the parts.  Now I'll have to RMA through Gigabyte and that will take ages.  Fml

If I reset the PSU, it will do it again, but if I don't reset the PSU, it won't try to come back on when I hit the power switch again.  Like it locks itself out or something.

i had that happen with a UD3H, was it shippied in the cold ? or did the box look banged around ?

also have you tried switching to the backup bios

Same thing happened to me, as it turns out it's the psu, exactly how you describe it. would do the same thing and even not do anything until i reset it.

^this is how you test it :)

Only thing that's different in our cases is that yours is DOA and mine did it randomly after about a year of service :P

Thanks bradscoolio.  I did this test and the same thing happens as when I have ot hooked up to the mobo.  The single fan I had hooked up to the PSU for the test spun up for about a second (and lit up- it has blue LEDs)  ands the PSU did about a half a turn and then both fans quit.  So I guess it's the PSU then.  Fuck.  Better than the motherboard because I just got the PSU... But still... Fuck.

it's better it happened to the psu because you can take it strait back for a refund/replacement, if it had been working for a year like mine you would of had to send it away for an RMA :/ the dudes at the computer shop you bought it at will replace DOA components lickedy split

I actually had the same problem in my first build, it sounds like your CPU isn't getting enough power but I could be wrong.

Step 1: Check your motherboard's manual for a troubleshooting system within, some mobo's use a light system with +5 lights displaying the stages in the PC's boot cycle and how far it gets, this will let you know where it crashed and what's going on. Some use a tiny speaker, but I haven't seen that in a long time so it might not even exist anymore. Most modern mobo's and consumer level mobo's have a troubleshooting method so look for one.

Step 2: MAKE SURE YOU PLUGGED IN YOUR 8 PIN AND IT IS FIRMLY CONNECTED. I cannot stress this enough, most of the time when I see these builds go wrong like this, the builder made a beginners mistake and left some power connector loosely plugged, or didn't plug it in at all.

Step 3: Rebuild. Trust me. Take it apart, put it back together with a clear mind. Don't mess around and watch a lot of tut videos while you're doing it and make sure you have everything in the right place, refer to your mobo manual and your case manual to find out where things go and what to do.

Step 4: Contact your mobo manufacturer, they'll help you troubleshoot and figure out what's going on with your build, and they'll help you pinpoint the problem and register any warranty services or help you through the claims or returns process if need be.

Broken parts happen, but it's not as common as you think, most likely you made some sort of mistake somewhere, most beginners do, it's nothing to be ashamed of. Just stay calm, take it apart, put it back.

Well if the paper clip PSU test means anything, then the PSU is certainly bad.  New one arrives tomorrow so we'll see what happens then.  I had to return the other PSU anyway because it was missing the AC cable.  Tested it using the AC cable from my monitor.

newInstance PSU came in today, successful post, and hours of gaming tonight!  Thanks again for the diagnosis, bradscoolio!
