Just feels wrong

I feel a little dirty especially running in seamless mode...

Don't feel bad.. you were young and you need the money:P

One day I'll get my head around hardware passthrough but I only have the one graphics card so that's off the cards for a bit.

Seamless mode is a good feature in virtualbox :)

No integrated graphics on your CPU?

Nope, 3930K... Also I wouldn't want my Linux games to be without a proper GPU. There really are only a couple of games I might want to play that are Windows only...

Much more to the point however is why is the first bunch of updates still installing two hours later!

For whatever reason I've never had a good experience with windows updates, taking forever, especially on a fresh install is normal.

I guess if you installed something like Ubuntu from 2011 and upgraded to the latest build it would take a while. Windows 7 SP1 came out in 2011 and that was the disk I had so there is that. Even so the way Windows updates, reboot, check again and there are more patches for the last bunch of patches...

I hate the whole process but i imagine its a restriction on how they built windows years ago that they cant get away from. good question though i wonder how long it would take to update a 2011 distro. Might test it out https://www.debian.org/releases/squeeze/

I guess it would be real tricky with something like Ubuntu. When upgrading from one version to the next you have to be completely up to date. But some of those will no longer have support so you would have to have old repo to pull from. 11.04 Natty wasn't an LTS so would be out of support, do the repos still exist for the older unsupported releases? If you installed Natty would there be updates available or would the repos return errors???

Sod it I'm downloading Natty now and going to spin it up just to see...

Keep in mind your not updating windows 7 to 8, so you wouldnt upgrade to a new release. take one of the LTS releases that has 5 years of support and update that.

Good idea but too late...

Ubuntu inception, let the fun and games begin...

Its a inception only if you run vbox inside a vm on proxmox =D that's insanity fg

And it stumbles at the first fence...

There is no repo to pull from :(

Well.. same as it would happen to upgrade from Win 2000 to win 8 or above ... the downside with ubuntu and its short release cycle is.. they are releases.

Looking at the support site they link to you would be able to go from 12.04LTS to the current build, but those old midterm releases are goners.

ha, thats why I was considering Debian 6 as its supported till January I think and was released in 2011.

If I remember right, the process is possible but not as easy as just doing the updates. You have to switch to some legacy repos.
