This Wednesday, some of your favorite websites and apps might not load as quickly as usual -- if they load at all.

Before you express outrage (or throw your device across the room in frustration), take note: The companies behind these web services are trying to send a message about net neutrality. They’re simulating a world in which broadband internet is no longer regulated as a public utility -- in which internet service providers (such as Comcast, Charter or Verizon) would have free competitive reign to charge a premium for high-speed access to certain websites.

so i was getting the faction server stuff setup and this popped up :D

I am guessing the same thing that happened last time with SOPA. Big banner Ad's and text boxes you have to click on to see the page. A few will shutdown for the day, to bad it wont be big ones like Google, youtube or Facebook.

Yeah, sorry for being such a negative nancy. I was just taking the view from an opposing position to try and imagine what response some would have if they didn't care, and taking the first post alone without proper context appeared to me like it would turn people off. If you add the next post with the actual info and list of some of the participants then you get a better understanding of how serious people are taking it. That was my whole point, to get the complete idea in this thread for people unwilling to click on the link.

This is definitely something that would affect lawmakers and their families. Remember that the dust bowl kept eluding action on a national level until it rained dirt on Washington D.C.

Adding this I guess

I do not know what it will take for these companies to stop doing this other than everyone unsubscribing cable for 3 months in some quixotic reality.

I see the problem as lack of choice. One article I read said 51% of America only has 1 ISP to "choose" from, while only 37% have a choice of 2 ISP's. If there was competition, like say Google Fiber moves in and provides double speed for half price with no BS, wait and see how fast the existing ISP's improve their service.

Followed by a 'Just Kidding' pop-up.

Lol thats a good one

It is called a regulatory body. See, the citizens get together to create these "rules" that function with the force of law. This is accomplished by having a central governing body that is accountable to it's voters.

THE problem is the dimwits that vilify any and all government regulation and scream: We need the country to be run by corporations because the self regulating market economy is the only way to be fair to the corporations!

Regardless of any evidence that corporations prioritize their best interests over the interests of their customers, the cultists continue to miss the point.

So is it going to be run by Congress critters that are already bought by ISPs?
Or will it be appointments by the president like it is now who have zero accountability?
Or...we now have elections for who rules the isp banhammer?

LOL I love how they've got pornhub right next to okcupid.

The randomly sprinkled porn sites in the mix really make me chuckle.

Also, MFW it's Jul 12 and you visit Amazon and there's no trace of a "protest".

If there are general elections, I'll run!

My rules are this: No caps, no throttling, clearly advertise your price, clearly display PROMISED ingress and egress, and no lobbying to prevent startup ISPs from deploying in the murica. The penalties for breaking such laws will be a day in the stockades for the CEO, per instance.

This is horrifying.

Your congress is bought by ISPs? Whoa... you guys better do something about that.

Maybe you can give ISPs more power, that should fix it.

cruel and unusual punishment disagrees with you

A guy can dream.

Special interest groups have a ton of clout in the USA. Not really sure what to do about it, aside from publicly publish who's getting money from where, but that doesn't do a whole lot either since people seem to not really care.
