Job after High School

So I Know this is a question that has been asked many times but I am wondering, I'm a senior in High School right now. I love tech. I build PCs, Fix phone screens, and anything else I can do related to technology. I would like to know what career path I should go down. I would like to major in IT as I see myself liking the hardware aspect. I really like hardware much better then software, and would really like to work with hardware or servers, so thats why I think IT. Any help is appreciated and I always like new ideas, Sorry if this question has been posted a bunch I just want to see what people would say to me. Cheers!

I'm majoring in Information Technology Management and I work in IT as a computer tech. I personally love the job. Especially in a small business environment. I get to work with tons of different technologies; computers, servers, switches, printers, point-of-sales units, access points, ect. The cool thing about small business is that you get to work with each piece of technology throughout the entire network. Meaning that installing a printer is not just walking up to the PC and installing it. You have to run the network cable, configure the port on the switch, add the drivers to a printer server, install the printer on each machine, inform the users on basic maintenance. There isn't any "oh I just run the cable" or anything, you work with each and every part.

I have very little experience in the software/ computer science fields although Wendell had a great analogy to compare the two.

If I remember correctly; Think of building a house, a computer scientist will know all the physics behind building it and the IT guy will have actually built said house.

Thank you so much, I appreciate the answer and all the information! I was thinking that I would major in IT, it just seems to suit me. Cheers and thanks for the answer!

What also isn't a bad Idea is if there is a local industrial electrical company see if you can work as a helper for the I&E techs. You will learn networking, electrical concepts, some programming (near bare metal), and how to wire fibre optic and Ethernet.

A local computer/electronics repair shop is another good place to cut your teeth.

Some college have part time help desk positions for students too so all are good ideas with what Unholyking said.

can't they just work at your store?

I appreciate the answer! I think I will attend a junior college, get my general studies done, then go to a near by University and major in CIS (Computer Information Systems)
