I was wondering if anyone has any experience passing through a 6500xt yet? I’m having some issues with pop os. I got a 6500xt for the media PC in the living room. I wanted to just plug it into the debian server I have there, but as that’s on stable, getting a driver working for that didn’t appear to be in the cards. I could be wrong there, so if anyone knows how to get the 6500xt to load a working driver under debian stable, I’d love to hear it. This post isn’t about that though. Since the 6500xt and stable wasn’t going to mix without upgrading all the wat to unstable, I decided I’d just passthrough the 6500xt to a pop os install. I’ve been running a gpu passthrough for gaming on ubuntu 20.04 for some time without any meaningful problems,
I did a bare metal pop os on my testrig, then pulled an image from that and used that as my VM running on a debian stable qemu/kvm hypervisor (on the testrig still. The 6500xt was working fine on the bare metal install.
In the VM however, the 6500xt doesn’t work. I can see the screen getting initialized, fans spinning, but it switches off immediately afterward. The VM sees the gpu, the amdgpu driver is bound to it, and gpu-manager reports a port. Screen is black however, and attempting to get some life out of the monitor with xrandr reports “port unknown”. If I remove the virtual gpu from the VM config, it doesn’t seem to boot up at all.
Not sure where to go from here. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
