ISPs: Comcast vs AT&T

My parents are thinking of switching our ISP's. I've looked and we can only get those two. I say stick with at&t but my mom wants to know what's wrong with comcast. I want the reasons why you bash comcast and time so I can tell her.

They're both horrible. Go with the lesser of two evils, ATT.

For starters they packet-spoof packets from unencrypted P2P programs regardless of the media being downloaded or uploaded, copyrighted or not. This slows down your download and upload speeds to a crawl while using an unencrypted P2P connection.

I prefer my current Earthlink connection, it's about 16 Mbps. However, I'm also soon to be in the market and I have to decide between Centurylink and Suddenlink (that whole eastern nc thing, where nobody has service anywhere.)

I was forced to switch over to Time Warner from Insight communications because Time Warner bought them out in this area. The only other service here is AT&T which is pretty shit for a decent sized city like Louisville, KY.

well att is junk here 10mgbs or.........

comcast .. the speed actually varies some nights it will hang 75-80 its weird

I wish I could embed a picture here that I have on my phone. It is a graph of my speedtest.net results showing that my AT&T internet drops out about once a week, and goes <1mbps about 3-4 times a week. I pay for 18mbps and I wish that is what they would give me. I haven't seen anything above 10mbps in over a month. I have had a terrible experience with AT&T and do not recommend them but the only alternative in my area is TWC which is even worse.

my problems with at&t have been

  • being charged extra without warning, even on contract, my bill is supposed to be $25, it's $30, because fuck you that's why
  • horrid router, i don't have a problem with wireless g, i have a probem with the fact that i have to get it replaced every few months
  • techs who don't know what they're doing, when i first got att internet it wouldn't work, they came down and fixed it, 3 days later i realized my landline wasn't working anymore, they came back, and lets just not talk about my amazing wireing skilles beeing shown off in the basement because they don't understand landline and internet going to the same house...

though comcast isn't in SE wisconsin so i can't say a word about them

I have had both comcast and AT&T Uverse (as well as fios). Comcast in my experience was miles ahead of AT&T.

This FCC report really sums it up for me.

EDIT: I should also note that while I can find no evidence of AT&T throttling certain websites, I have lots of issues with websites like Netflix and youtube and other streaming servicies despite having the 25/2 mbps plan. Comcast would also throttle these websites but atleast I could circumvent that by blocking a few IP addresses. Latency was also much better with comcast for mel. Lastly the comcast service was much more reliable.

I feel your pain...but I think to a greater extent.  I fucking hate NC and Centurylink.  My max connection speeds are 0.5 Mbps down and 0.1 Mbps up.
