So people are constantly saying that DSL has lower latency however my old DSL connection from verizon had 50-60ms minimum and my cable connection from bright house has a 10-20ms latency. Like yeah... is this just verizon being shit or?
dsl is a phone connection. It is sh*t. Coax is far better than this... (its crap also but still better than dsl)
I'm on DSL in the middle of the bush in Australia and I get 8ms ping to perth. (2 and a half hours drive)
I don't have a cable alternative that I can compare, but the connection from your door to the exchange is less responsible for latency then the backbone to your exchange.
With bright house (coax cable) i get 90-105 / 10-15mb (I pay for 70/5) and with verizon i got 7/0.5 (i payed for 15/1)
I've only had Internet service via fiber since I moved out, but the "DSL latency is better than cable" thing is certainly true in my parent's case. There are a lot of people sharing the cable node in their neighborhood and their neighbor's latency is pretty awful. Cox Cable does offer higher speeds, but the latency is all over the place (esp. nights and weekends).
I will add a small disclaimer though. It's been a couple years since I've had friends still in the neighborhood to compare to, so it may have improved since then.
