Is upgrading to Windows 10 from Windows 7 worth it?

So I've started reading a lot more about Windows 10 when my PC decided to have a automatic update date for today. I cancelled it, but it got me interested in upgrading from Windows 7. I don't really have any problems with Windows 7, but if Windows 10 is better than why not.

I've read some about the privacy issues, and saw that apparently they've got it onto Windows 7 and 8.1 also, so it isn't my main concern right now. I really just want to know how's the functionality? I mostly play games and browse the web, but I'd like to get into some light coding. I'm not that great with computers so I would prefer to not do extensive tweaking on Windows 10.

My PC is fairly outdated, I'm running AMD HD 6870 and FX 8320 so I'd like to be sure that there will be no hardware or driver issues with Windows 10 now or in the foreseeable future.

Now if I do decide to upgrade, will I keep all of my files (pictures, games, other software and such) or will I have to download them again? If I however decide to roll back to Windows 7 will i have to use a new Windows Product Key, this concerns me because I have a OEM WIndows 7, so AFAIK it's only a one time thing.

From what I've read Windows 10 stops being free 28. July so it's not like I'm in a huge hurry, I would just like to know if there are really any reasons as to why to upgrade. A list of Pros and Cons would be much appriciated.

Thanks for reading!

I've been on W10 since it released, and it started ok and has gotten better. There is a thread with the pitfalls with W10, all the telemetry and such. But personally, I like the ease of use. I do have a billion concerns over the tracking, but almost everything out there right now is watching us. I have an old W7 pc, and it's old, maybe 2007. It's slow as hell compared to what I'm using now, but I think that has everything to do with old hardware. Gaming with W10 has been good to me so far, but I'm only running one gpu, nothing fancy. I think my frame rates are about the same as W8.1 in games, no real difference noticed. Eventually, everyone is going to have to upgrade to W10 that is running windows, unless they go chrome os or linux. I imagine when the W10 free upgrade deadline hits, M$ will release a torrent of crap that bricks everyone's shit. This is in their best possible corporate interest, so it's almost mandantory. They will blame it on chinese hackers or something. My system is a Z97, so maybe that also accounts for the good experience I've had so far. I also used the notepad for blocking ads, so even cnn and other seriously ad-driven sites pull up almost as fast as I can click the mouse. Just remember to thumbs up all of tek syndicate's videos on youtube!

yes

dont think so, there is a built in option in settings to roll back

just an FYI, I have used Windows 10 as my sole operating system since the first preview launched.

I'm really enjoying WIN10 and dare I say the Edge Browser. I have WIN10 installed on 3 machines and on my main machine I've avoided installing Chrome or Firefox and I'll be damned, Edge is pretty good.

We are working on an answer over here:

It depends abit on your usage basicly.
Windows10 on its own is not a bad OS by all means.
But performance wise there is not realy much of a diffrence with either Windows 7 or 8.1 in my opinnion.
The main diffrence will be there for the gamers in the future,
who like the to play all the new upcomming DX12 AAA games.

For the rest, the privacy issues that come with windows10 are ofc a thing.
But if you dont realy care too much about that.
Then i would say why not?

I see. I've decided to hold of upgrading until July, so I won't have to pay for the evident upgrade that is going to happen anyways.

Thanks for the input guys!

i think, but i´m not fully sure.
That MS will comes at the end of this your, or maybe next year with an big update to Windows10.
I would suggest to hold out to that, and allot of bugs with current windows10 systems might get fixed by then.

Wait you don't have your stuff on ssd?

That is like saying "The next EA game released won´t have DLCs in it."
Microsoft would have to change direction completly to fix half of what is technically wrong in Windows 10.

There is little to no benefit to upgrading to Win 10 atm. It is frankly less useful then the previous win 8.1. The usefulness of win 10 is where it completely strikes out. The newer techs are interesting but gets lost once your start discovering what works and what doesn't work. Technologies are suppose to advance ease of use and compatibility. While i do not think it is completely terrible, it far less useful than previous versions. My opinion ?

yes its worth is. they have worked through most of the bugs. considering how hard they are pushing it, you will see these bugs smashed quickly. if you dont like certain settings people have made programs to fix/ change things. as for a developer its way better than before. ease of use.

I'm using SpyBot Anti-Beacon to circumvent the Microsoft 'silliness'.

Another one lost to SkyNet... I am sorry for you to have given away your soul.

if you want to delete more barryed telem. you need to go into the command line. esp cortana

Tools like beacon are pretty much useless in my opinnion.
Allthough it does help a bit with preventing the spying.
But it doesnt prevent all of it.
In fact Windows 10 has been provent to be able to work arround the host file.
So i would not be suprised that those entries done by beacon are getting ignored aswell.
Also it looks to me that some of the telemetry tracking is hardcodded in the OS, and probably impossible to disable.

Also how often does Beacon updates it self on a weekly base?
Because if they maintain Beacon just like their main product spybot then well......

I do have an ssd. No hdd in my build. I don't have anything important to store on it.

once microsoft once it has your information, they will always have it. and they are willing to share it with just about anyone.
so do you want to own your pc and control your information? or do you want Microsoft to own your pc and control your information?
if microsoft owns it then for the rest of your life you'll have to worry about what they will do with it.
