I am using Ubuntu 14.04 in a VM on freenas 11. I run my network AP control software (unifi controller) and my IP camera recording software (unifi video) on it.
Can anyone tell me if ubuntu 14.04 is still secure or not?
I run apt update & upgrade weekly.
should I be doing anything else?

Whether it is secure has much to do with how you have set it up: firewall rules, ssh access, smb rules, PPAs, encryption, and so on. Whether it is a system capable of being reasonably secure, the answer is yes, it is supported until August 2019..
