Is this wireless network possible?

Or something to the effect?

I want to get our two family businesses out of the paper age. In order to do this, we need to digitize all our client information which is easy. To make things even easier still, it would be nice to setup a server/cloud system, with the central hub at home, where we could set and transfer appointments on the go, upload pictures to tablets at each location, send fresh pics to the home to be edited...just streamline business in general.

I've watched the "turn your old pc into an epic router" and would like to do that with my old HP.

Hardware specs:

  • P4SD mobo (a cheap model with no agp slot...)
  • 0.75GB ram (max 4GB)
  • 20GB hdd + 80GB hdd (could I get a WD velociraptor drive with an ide to sata adapter?)
  • Intel P4 2.8GHz (upgradable to P4 extreme, which is a dual core I believe)
  • 240W psu
  • tp-link 300 Mbps wireless N pci adapter
  • buying 2 dual port gigabit cards

One more thing. I gutted the hardware from my motorola sbg6580 modem/wireless/cable router. I want to remove the integrated wireless antennas because they probably suck compared with what I plan to utilize (if it's even going to be possible). My goal is to mount this hardware in the chassis so that I can run the coax directly to the case and eliminate the need for an external modem enclosure.

Pointers, questions, comments, things I should know that I probably don't...all appreciated. If this idea is totally stupid, please say why. THX.

EDIT: I want to attach a cable to one of the two wireless adapter card antenna connectors, through a wifi amplifier, outside to an omni-directional antenna. At each business location, there would be a Yagi-Uda antenna antenna.

Uh...If you want advice I would setup a VPN using Pfsense or connect a hard drive the router . Pfsense has many packages that can help you with your task.

So you have your business location and you wish to store the main server off site at your home? Or are they in the same location?

Need to know this as it greatly changes the solution to the problem.

The former is correct, two business locations and the home as the central third.

Also one location is ~6000 ft NW and the other is ~16000 ft N, but that's more to do with signal strength.

I intend to use Pfsense in conjunction with freebsd or linux, though I'm still researching the pros/cons of each. I still have to recover the old hdds to see what's on them and if they are even worth using and they had xp.
