So I'm looking into buying a PS4 as cheap as humanly possible as I don't want to invest too much money into the platform so I'm looking at getting one with a broken bluray and replacing the drive to save on costs... Now, I was planning to mount it under my desk and possibly using a third party bluray disc reader (since it would be cheaper) and setting it on top of my desk... Would it be possible to solder/plug one into a ps4 and have it work? google searching has yielded no results for this question. Thanks!
The optical drive in the PS4 is very different to what"s use in a computer so no you could not use one from a PC.
And i don't think a USB drive would work due to DRM and crap like that.
You could always just use the system with out an optical drive and download games then later get a replacement of Ebay.
I've had a fear that it may have extra connectors that a normal bluray might now have but wasn't really sure... I basically have my fingers crossed there's a pinout map somewhere that I could just rearrange some wires from a usb bluray and make it work.
Do you know of any other issues a broken PS4 could have that are relatively simple (for a pc modder like myself) to work around that could help me get it on the cheap?
maybe find one that is "dead" but w/ a working disk drive then just transplant it into the working system? Just my first thought here
If I remember correctly from modding the PS3 the drives have extra circuity for the DRM to keep you from using home burnt BLU-R disks, at least I seem to remember reading that about the PS4 on some forum somewhere.
Yeah... I've basically accepted at this point a 3rd party reader wont work, shame, would have made this project easier and cheaper.
You can buy games from the PS Store so I guess the blue-ray driver is not necessary if you don't plan on watching movies.
I think the only easy fix on a console would be a dead power supply or a system that no longer ejects discs. Or maybe take a gamble on getting one that needs a re flow and hit it with a heat gun.
Personally i would never pay money for a broken console.
