Is this a good rig (first-time builder)?

I live in Ireland but I have to use Amazon.co.uk for prices so they'll be in pounds...

I'm a first-time builder and I'm really just wondering if this is a good rig (BF3 on Ultra or BF3 on High with Fraps) and if the parts I have picked are compatible.

Thank you very much for your help in advance.

GPU - Asus Nvidia GeForce 2GB GTX 670 DirectCU II - £308

Cooling - Arctic Cooling Freezer Xtreme Rev.2 - £26.30

Case - NZXT Phantom USB 3.0 Big Tower Chassis - White - £99.90

Mobo - AsRock Z77 Extreme4 - £101.90

CPU - Intel 3rd Generation Core i5-3570K - £166.40

RAM - Corsair CMX16GX3M2A1600C11 XMS 16GB - £58.60

I already have an SSD, HDD and Optical Drive...

Total: £812 approx

Every thing looks fine for me but do you have a psu?

I'd choose different ram.  That ram runs at 1.65v

Here's some Corsair Low Profile 2x8GB ram that runs at 1.5v for a little more.  I chose low profile ram to ensure that your heatsink won't interfere.

But, that heatsink is massive, costs more and performs worse than the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo.  So maybe you could get that and some regular corsair vengance 2x8gb ddr3-1600mhz ram instead.

Otherwise, if you have a PSU, as sny said, then things should work nicely.

^ jeff makes a good point, i woulden't get the cooler and also you will not need all of that ram you would be better getting some 1866 and only getting 8GB (2x4)

Yeah, I do. It's  Powercool 750w 80 Plus Bronze PSU. Modular, I think. It's pretty good, and I made sure that it would be suitable for the case. Here's the link anyway:

I tried getting the 212 Evo (that was my first choice) but it won't ship to Ireland. If you could find one that does, I'd definitely get it. As for the RAM, I think you're right. 8GB is more than enough for gaming, and rendering/ video editing should be pretty fast, too. Thanks for the link, also. It surprises me that there is somewhere on the internet where everyone is friendly and well-mannered. :)

Thanks Play Dead. I've heard that the 1866 RAM is faster, and as I said to Jeff it should be fine for what I'll be using the pc for. Thank you :)

Actually, the link you sent to the Hyper 212 Evo will ship to Ireland! Thank you so much! I can now confidently buy the parts. I also have a noobie question which may sound ridiculous. Somebody told me on YouTube (he was probably lying) that you had to buy the screws for the mobo separately. I don't really believe him...but I wan't to be sure. Is it true that all the parts come with the necessary components (cables with PSU, screws with mobo, etc.)? Thanks again in advance!

you should drop the 670, at that price you can get a 7970 which completely destroys the 670 in performance

They're pretty similar...they just vary depending on the game/program. I don't think it "destroys" it...plus I've seen in reviews that the single fan means it gets pretty hot unless you get the Asus model.

I also saw another post on this forum about  7970 vs gtx 670 and everybody said to get the 670. Anyway, I prefer nvidia to amd radeon. If you still think I should get the 7970, I'm all ears (this is not sarcasm, I'm seriously willing to listen to your argument).

take a look at what other people say

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/366013-33-radeon-7970

at release there was a 4-5% difference in nvidias favor, with the new 12.7 drivers there is now a 6-7% difference in AMDs favor, not to mention that the 7970 overclocks better which then gives it a 20-25% lead in performance over the 670

http://www.overclock.net/t/1307626/hd-7970-or-gtx-670

ever since the release of the 12.7 drivers, the 670 is comparable to the 7950

here is some benchmarks of the 7970 and 670 both overclocked, and new drivers

Okay, I've gotta say, you've won me over. I can still use GPU Tweak and PhysX with the AMD card anyway. Plus, Borderlands 2 doesn't seem to come with this card. Thanks for the advice! :D

Glad I could help!

The main reason I'd pick a 7970 over the 670 would be for the promo gaming bundle because then you end up with 3 more games to give away as Christmas presents or you to sell and offset the actual cost of the card but I don't think it's available in Ireland or even Amazon UK.  Otherwise you're right, they're close but when overclocked, the 7970 is pretty much way up there.

I would just take the ram out that is it

Yeah I've changed my mind on that. I'm getting the 2 X 8GB sticks Jeff recommended. Thanks!
