Yes this should do it, it will certainly kick arse compared to a console.

Changes I made:
I replaced the 4300 with a Phenom II x4 as I wanted to put in as much money as possible into the GPU. Got a cheaper mobo, but still with great features. I changed the memory, as it's a couple dollars cheaper, and will perform just as well as the HyperX memory. For the HDD, I put in a 1TB Barracuda to give your friend plenty of space. It'll be just as fast as the Blue drive, and has double the space for less than 10$ more. For the GPU, I was able to put in an XFX 7870, which will give you a huge leap in performance over the 7770.
unfortunately the x4 955 black edition cpu is more expensive in nz but would the x4 940 black edition doas for the 7870 i would have love to put include that in the system to but the prices of graphics cards in nz are alot more expenxive if it help my friend has a budget of 800-900 dollars and if someone could put a better list together for me that would be awsome here is a link. the website is gathers all of the cheapest prices in nz

That is a perfectly fine build as all of the components are compatible with eachother.
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/w9a2 for a little less you can get a better gpu and cpu
fx 6300 and 7850 2gb
yea akira4950 in new zealand the prices are alot different so that build isnt going to work if you can put together a build nz nz prices that would really help the budget is 800-900 nzd
