Is there a way to manage android memory usage?

I’ve noticed my tablet freezes and stutters when running 2 or more apps like working on a document and listening to iHeartRadio in the background and receiving messages in the floating Messenger icons. Sometimes the System UI crashes and restarts, remains irresponsible for some time and even remains laggy after a reboot. CCleaner shows 1.89Gb of ram on my tablet and 1.39Gb being used when no apps are running in the background.

Try to locate what app is memory leaking all over the place. If you just reboot your tablet and you let it sit happens the same thing?
I have to say that memory management of stock Android (like the one on the Shield) is really good so have to be some third party app going nuts.

Get the app System Monitor Lite and navigate (swipe left) to Top Apps and sort by RAM usage. If it's a single app leaking memory you'll be able to see there. If it's because you have a load of background apps running I'd use the app Greenify to hibernate the ones you don't need to have running all the time.

Greenify everything :) Only allow certain things to run active in the background.

I have Greenify installed, I addend the hibernate widget to mt home screen. Still don't understand why apps I haven't opened are running in the background shortly after hibernating.

Very useful, I didn't know why so many apps run in the background when I haven't even opened them.

Nuke every app you do not directly use if possible. You might even consider getting a malware scanner like Malware_bytes to use manually from time to time. Worse case is backup personal files to microsd card or pc ( remembering to scan all files for malware beforehand ) Factory reset to stock config ( refer to user/owner manual on/off line )

Per default, all your apps will have a background service running just by you booting the phone. It checks for notifications, updates, or keeps track of GPS and the like, for instance an app can push a notification to you about this or that store, if you are in the general area of that store, just an example.. Some apps are also linked in "chains", so if one opens, the other does too, like Facebook and Messenger for instance. As far as I know there is no easy way to know which apps are chained to others, it is not written anywhere, but is of course observable. When you hibernate apps with Greenify, you'll see chained behaviour. Some apps also open at random it seems, I have recently installed Signal, and it opens (read: opens background services, not the user interface of the app) seemingly at random, it could be from chained behaviour though.

You phone probably comes with some default apps you are not using. I uninstalled all updates and deactivated google music, movies, newspapers and whatever other things there was. These does not activate themselves and can thus not open from chained behaviour, for example if I open another google app.
