Today I was given the opportunity to install Windows 10 from Windows 7. Considering it.
But I would like to know, is there a Linux Windows 10 clone or a distro in the works because I am willing to wait to see the two side-by-side in a comparative shootout on what they both offer.
I considered putting this thread inside the open source section but I figured linux would have something clone-ish (which they kinda do..shame Zorin is costly and temporary...almost seems like a Windows look-a-like scam)
edit: I guess Zorin has long term support for it's OS 9 till 2019. Zorin's OS 10 is what I was referring to which just came out and what is pictured above
If you want a windows environment install windows. Most users who are not familiar with linux won't understand the principles and design choices made in linux based distros so if you switch to a "wanna be windows" clone based on linux you'll be surprised to see that they're totaly different. If you want a Linux disto that does exactly what Windows was ment for, you won't have any luck.
Though if you want to try something different, Linux is the right place to look.
Well I've used OS's other than windows before. Have no problem with using them (osx, suse, arch, fedora, etc) but I am considering ditching Windows 10 and am curious how far community driven os's have come
Linux is not a windows replacement OS, can it provide a good desktop experience, absolutely. However, if you want it to work like windows, just use windows. If you want to replace windows you need to ask yourself how do I use my computer and what programs do i use that i must have. Chances are most of them will work on linux or have an open source alternative. Good place to start is here on the forms for linux programs. Then it's a matter of what flavor will suit you take a look at distrowatch you'll find Mint, Debian and Ubuntu are the top ones. they are all similar Mint is built off ubuntu and ubuntu is built off debian.
For instance I really like linux, but there are several programs/games that just will not run under linux so I have to dual boot my PC.
There are a wide variety of Linux distros that offer the traditional desktop enviornment. Linux mint, Manjaro, Debian, etc. They all over the "traditional" desktop with a taskbar on the bottom and a start menu.
If you're new to linux and you want a replacement for windows 10 instead of upgrading I would suggest Linux mint because it is simple and built in such a way that it is easy to use for new linux users. If you have more experience I'd suggest Manjaro because of the Arch base and the AUR that is very helpful when looking for software, almost anything can be found on it. It's really nice.
I don't think you're going to find a windows 10 "clone" because windows 10 is still a very traditional desktop, more so than 8. You can find mac clones or use Gnome or Unity but Windows is kinda the basic thing and you will find that in any distro.
You should probably expect a new Zorin version by the time the support for Zorin 10 has expired. So it is not really temporary. That is how the release schedule works usually. And a LTS every 2 years or so.
Generally If anything Windows 10 is coping stuff from Linux environments. Win 10 mostly reminds be of KDE Plasma 5. I think they copied a lot from it. You can try it.
