Is the VP9 codec and .webm the future?

I encode a lot of videos in .mp4 using one of the many, many encoders that comes with Sony Vegas 11. I know that Google are pushing for a wider aceptance of their VP9 codec and webm container but do you actually see it becoming a reality in the future

Also, does anyone know where I can actually get hold of this damn codec, The internet seems to have a distinct lack of information regarding this

There's no point in using VP9 or x265 until there's real support for them tbh, as i'm fairly sure that they run like crap atm, though I haven't tried them for a little while.

What we need is for more hosting sites like imgur to adopt webm.
