Is the Motorola Moto G any good?

Hey there people of the tek,

I am looking to buy a new phone with a really low budget. I'm looking for something durable but isn't full of bells and whistles, just a phone that does calls, plays music and has basic android functionality. The Motorola Moto G is pretty much it with a quad core CPU and 1 gig of ram it seems fast enough for someone like me. People also say that it sounds good with headphones connected (I don't plan on using the loud speaker), has 16 gigs of memory and is android 4.4.

Now before you say it's not the best phone I don't NEED the best phone in the market, I'm still using the old HTC chacha and I'm only replacing it because the charging slot, keyboard and speaker are dying and it isn't worth fixing. I only use my PC when I'm home and my phone just sits there charging or connected to speakers or something. So I want something good enough to entertain me and keep me connected to the internet while I'm not home.

If any of you thinks there is a better phone around the 200$ mark feel free to help me.

Cheers!

It should be fine im intrested in it too

I've seen a woman leave it under water for 30 minutes (turned off, of course) and it survived so I guess the build quality is good too but I never used a Motorola, have you?

The Motorola G is a decent phone for people on a budget and if your looking for basic functionality smartphones than it also depends on what OS you want (IOS is out of the picture, so i'm saying either an android or a windows phone.) for a budget. Smartphones with just basic functionality like the Moto G and the Moto E are just a couple example in the market. Then you have phones like the Nokia Lumia 520 which originally was a flagship phone and now currently is being sold over in AT&T's Go phone plans (Correct me if I'm wrong on that statement.)

Now before you go telling me I just circled around the bush here is my thoughts on the Moto G and Moto E lineup.

The Moto G/Moto E smartphones are motorola's answers for people who are on a budget but want the same experience as you would get from their flagship model the Moto X. Quality wise the Moto X's internals are better for the simple fact that it seems to have better processing speeds and more ram than it's little brothers, but on the externals the Moto G and the Moto E in my experience have a sturdier feel to them than the X. But the G's shortfall is I think the fact that it lacked an upgradable memory slot right off and you pay extra for the option as well as 4g support, while the E lacks a lot of the bells and whistles that it's older brothers have it initially comes with a semi-decent amount of upgradability with it's preinstalled MicroSD slot and enough ram to handle most applications.

So in conclusion in my experience the G and E are solid phones on a "You get what you pay for." price with a decent interface and nothing too fancy about it. But honestly when buying phones or anything for that matter is just do heavy research look at multiple reviews from different people, go straight into the specs and be open to look at international models, a lot of phones I've found have a decent quality and it's already GSM unlocked from the get go. Though if you are running CDMA than refer to back to the suggestion of heavy research.

I actually did some research and I am well aware of the specs, this post is just a part of my research. As for the memory, I am using the 2011 HTC chacha with only 15mb of usable memory and I'm not suffering that bad so memory isn't a problem, the Moto E on the other hand is much slower than the Moto G.

I will pay extra for the 16 gig model however I won't pay extra for the 4G model as I live in an area that doesn't have 3G yet + 3G is fast enough for a phone.

I did consider a windows phone but I'd rather have an android as it has more apps even though windows probably has all the apps I need I'd rather have the option to download the apps than not have them at all so windows and IOS are not exactly what I want.

an old flip one with an antenna

I have the Moto G and have had it since December, good phone for the money and it has basically paid itself off. I would suggest using the runtime ART instead of Delvik. After doing so my phone felt a lot snappier and had a lot less instances of crashing and hanging, Maybe once every few hours opposed to multiple times within the hour.

I have one and I definitely recommend it

I have had the 16gb Moto G since December and would definitely recommend it. I would get the 16gb just to be safe. I like that motorola has consistently updated the phone since its release. Also you should look into replacing the launcher when you get it cause the stock one is pretty bad.

I'm an android noob but with a quick google search I assume this is done by updating to android 4.4?

Of course I'll buy the 16 gigs model. As for the launcher do I have to root it? also what launchers would you recommend for a phone with such specs?

No you don't have to root it. There are a ton of launchers on the play store. Right now I am using Smart Launcher 2 which is very simple and very light on system resources.

Sorry for the late reply, but yes ART was implemented in 4.4. I have had the update for a while now.

Oh thanks for your time man, I appreciate it. Will do some more research when I buy the phone as well.

In that price range it's difficult to find a better phone.

My mom needed a new phone so I recommended the Moto 4G to her. And damm, I wish I had one myself. The only downside of the phone is the camera, it's really really crappy.

go for the moto g 4g its amazing !!!!!!!!! very very fast and has an micro sd card slot big 4.5 inch lcd display and google update all the glorious google updates!!!!!!!!!!!!!

now you can get wifi almost anywhere so 4g isnt worth it

I live in an area without 4G so it isn't worth it and as I said I already don't need 16 gigs.

Well tbh I'm not the best photographer. I don't even own a camera so that shouldn't be a concern.
