Is my graphics card dead, or am I missing something?

Pictures of the problem. https://imgur.com/a/D5rxNbC
My PC Specs.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1800X 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor @ 3.7 Ghz
Motherboard: MSI X370 XPOWER GAMING TITANIUM ATX AM4 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory @ 2666 Mhz (max due to stability)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11 GB FTW3 ELITE GAMING WHITE Video Card
Power Supply: Corsair RMx 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

About a year ago I started getting some weird freezes while playing games, they would happen about once every 1-2 months, then about once a month, now they are happening almost every time I play a game. Sometimes my GPU is at 95% sometimes its only at 60%. CPU is never maxed.

Right before the whole PC freezes, I can hear people still talking on discord but my mic cuts out instantly. I can usually hear the people talking for about 10-15 seconds before the full freeze happens.

Also, if I alt-f4 as soon as the pixelization happens I can exit the game and the PC won’t freeze, it will just hang for about 3-5 seconds then it will play all the other inputs I did during the hang. I can also “alt+ctrl+dele” to avoid the PC from freezing and needing to be restarted.

Things I have tried to correct this issue in roughly the order I have done them.

  • Lower my power limit to 90% and my core and mem clock by -100mhz on the GPU using MSI afterburner
  • Updated the GPU drivers thru NVidea GeForce Experience.
  • Updated Windows.
  • Reseated GPU and all RAM DIMMs
  • Moved my games to a new SSD with a new SATA cable.

This didn’t work so today I this, in this order.

  • Updated Windows and use O&O shut up to disable telemetry and disable Cortana.
  • Ran MemTest86 Free (3 passes w/ all tests no errors)
  • Updated all Motherboard drivers through MSI website
  • Updated Motherboard BIOS thought MSI website
  • Ran RYZEN Master (trying to look for any CPU drivers)
  • Checked for any RAM drivers (couldn’t find anything)
  • Uninstalled NVidea GeForce and all Video drivers using Guru3d DDU
  • Installed GPU drivers using TinyNvidiaUpdateChecker

Still the problem persists. In the past I have used:

I was going to reduce my CPU clock back to 3.6 and try to push my RAM closer to 3600 but I don’t know what else to do.

Any help would be appreciated.

Using event viewer I can see I usually get these types of error messages right before freezing.

Does the problem happen with other programs or just that game?
How close are you to the max limit on power and speed?
One of the main reasons I do not advocate overclocking and under-powering a system is because you can go too far and cause some real damage!

dial back the speed to nearly its normal setting it came with. and if possible use a non contact (laser thermometer) and take frequent readings of it.
get the specs of the card ( normal operating range and heavy load range)
If the gpu is running hotter under normal speed then you have cooked its thermal conductive pad or paste, and possibly damaged the gpu chip)

quite often some online games can give you issues with performance based on the gpu load
hence the reason I asked if this happened with any other program.

one other possibility is a corrupted driver for the gpu!

Just gaming, I don’t do any rendering or programing.

One of the main reasons I do not advocate overclocking and under-powering a system is because you can go too far and cause some real damage!
dial back the speed to nearly its normal setting it came with.

I haven’t over clocked it, the only change I’ve done is increase the default fan profile. With the default fan profile it was getting to as high as 85C. I fan that fan profile for about a year before I changed it so it wouldn’t go above 80C. It usually stays at around 76C under load.

How close are you to the max limit on power and speed?

90% power limit, -100Mhz on core clock and mem clock. Still crashed

one other possibility is a corrupted driver for the gpu!

I tried to do a full uninstall with DDU and reinstalled the drivers w/o GeForce experience. I wish a had a test system to put the GPU in.

Ran MemTest86 Free (3 passes w/ all tests no errors)

At what settings and how long did it run (time)?

What CPU cooler do you have? Which case do you use? (airflow)

Have you run 3Dmark yet?

Old thermal paste both CPU and GPU could be worth looking in to, dust in the case and coolers is another. But be sure to take the systematic approach.

If you have a spare hard drive laying around I would recommend a reinstall and test it again on a new installation with the bare minimum things installed, just Nvidia driver and benchmark/game.

Windows from USB or Ubuntu from USB can be an alternative.

Looks like bad VRAM

For example the RTX cards that were dying did this pattern here:

Note: For readability, put the log into code-tags:

At what settings and how long did it run (time)?

Note really sure? I believe it was running @ 3600 mhz
I did 14 test that ran 3 times, that took about 7 hours. So about 2.3 hours to run thru 13 test. Here is a link to each test https://www.memtest86.com/tech_individual-test-descr.html
and here is a link of the test running. I didn’t wait for the 4th test to finish.

What CPU cooler do you have?
NZXT Kraken X62 Rev 2 98.17 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
I don’t think I’ve scene my CPU above the mid 60C.

Which case do you use? (airflow)
Anidees Crystal ATX Mid Tower Case
This case looks like it but with no mesh in the power supply cage

I have 3 intake fans in the front with 1 exhaust on the back and 2 exhaust on the top. The top is where the NZXT water block is mounted.

Have you run 3Dmark yet?

No, Will 3Dmark let me know whats crashing?

Old thermal paste both CPU and GPU could be worth looking in to, dust in the case and coolers is another. But be sure to take the systematic approach.

I did dust it when I reseated the RAM and GPU. If my temps stay below 75C do you think it could be a temp issue. I haven’t tried to repaste anything yet.

If you have a spare hard drive laying around I would recommend a reinstall and test it again on a new installation with the bare minimum things installed, just Nvidia driver and benchmark/game.
Windows from USB or Ubuntu from USB can be an alternative.

I may try that next. The USB windows. I tried moving the game to the next SSD w. new SATA cable, but I have not tried the operating system.

Looks like bad VRAM

Any solution, like under-volting or reducing mem speed? I redused the power limit to 90% and the mem clock to -100 MHz but it still crashed once.

Note: For readability, put the log into code-tags:

 thank you

underclock VRAM through MSI afterburner by 100Mhz
each time it happens knock it down another 100mhz and reboot

7 hours of memtest is pretty good in this case.

The cpu cooler and case look good, be sure to mount it in the best way for better temps and product longevity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbGomv195sk

I recommended 3Dmark to see if the artifacts happen there as well. Or if it’s a game specific problem.

I think GigaBusterEXE advise is really good. If it helps, your card is either dying or overheating. New thermal paste and pads for the memory would be the next step then (both for the gpu).

If it doesn’t help i would go for the clean install of Windows and test again. (game, 3dmark and Vram memory downclocking)

My CPU block is located on the top of my case, exhausting air out. Not the best to be using in case air too cool my CPU but it hasn’t done above mid 60C so I think its fine. The pump is located at the bottom of the loop so I don’t think it will fail any time soon.

Will do. I can report back after its done.
