Is it worth upgrading i5 2400 to i7 3770

thinking of up grading but is it worth 300.00 to up grade to 3770 k from a 2400. i try allot of different games but play few. i am legally blind there for game controls need to be simler to diablo 3

No I would go all the way up to 4770K or 4790. That is far more worth the upgrade. Even though you have to buy a motherboard.. other than hyperthreading you wont see much from that 300 dollar upgrade... you would see more from a 500 dollar upgrade to a 4790K.. TBH because the extra virtual cores really will be marginal for most applications.. you may see a slight bump but that generational upgrade isnt very worth it just saying.
To further prove anything here... If you really want to stay on lga1155 Go ahead and fire up System monitor and see how much your CPU is actually being taxed.. probably not as much as you think so a video card upgrade would be more worth it if you dont want to upgrade your mobo and stuff

not worth... they aren't faster enough to care. (even those 1150)

The used market might offer better prices. Fair value should be under two hundred dollars. I sold my non k ivy under two hundred. If you find a regular forum member on any website it is decent at that price. The newer intel 1150 socket seems to have a better IMC, along with a few other improvements as far as I can tell. Depending on the motherboard you can get that non k ivy up to 4.1-4.3 GHZ.

An i7 3770k should NOT cost $300.... I'd say $200~$220 sounds about right.

Still, I wouldn't upgrade your i5 2400. It should be fine for gaming for a while.

My brother has a i5 2400 and I have a i7 3770. There is almost no difference between them when it comes to gaming.

Keep what you have.

If you feel the need to upgrade something, get a new graphics card. What card do you currently have?

There's hardly any difference for gaming. Games aren't coded to utilize Hyper-Threading properly as of yet, and they probably won't ever be. It's all about dat single-core performance, baby. Keep the 2400.

I have geforce 770 oc right now

Yeah, see that is quite a powerful GPU to pair with that CPU. I would have opted for an i3 at least. An i5 would be more ideal, or an AMD FX 8-core.

It will probably be okay for most games if you OC the G3258 to at least 4.2Ghz or so. Have you overclocked it at all as of yet, or is it still at stock?

i have a i5 2400
3.1 ghz just ran oc it sead oc 25% so i am not sur what it is running. i used the asus oc tool

What game gives you trouble? That i5 has a long way to go until it's 'obsolete' by the pace things advance now.
I went from Wolfdale3M to Haswell i7 4770 and while it's much faster, there are cases where a core 2 quad overclocked wouldn't feel much slower (older 2 threaded programs).
Read this to give you some perspective:

i have no problems with current set up. just always wonder is there sum thing that much better for a little bit moor and kids get my hand me downs. improve one improve all.

Install MSI afterburner or any other program that lets you see the CPU usage of each core while you game, if you see the GPU start to dip under 99% usage chances are that its getting bottle necked by your CPU.

Also, ignore the 4000 intel series, the difference between a 4770k and a 3770k is marginal.
And its even less worth it as you have to get a new motherboard.

I say get a 3770k, its not a bad choice at all, staying on the same platform is a very good value.
