Is it possible to do split screen on PC?

I remember my console days when I could bring over a friend and they would bring over their own xbox controller and we all would play some game like call of duty or halo. Now it's harder to play together now that we are all on PC. The game really doesn't matter as long as it has LAN. Is it possible?

Some games allow it, not many FPS games though.

Games that I have that allow multiple controllers:

Battleblock Theater

Capsized

Castle Crashers

Divekick

Portal 2

Trine 1 and 2

Worms Revolution

Interesting, thanks!

Does it work for multiple keyboard + mouse?

The only one I know of is Trine 2, haven't tested the others.

It won't work with multiple mice, but you would be able to use 2 or more keyboards but one person would have to use wasd, next arrows, next uhjk etc. It would be better with controllers but games with support for split screen and controller support are literally narrowed down to, 10, on steam that is.

You could try looking for a mod. I know there is a minecraft one that allows that. If you can get the key bindings right and have a good PC and the game lets you, you can host a server and have 2 instances of the same game open.

For games like L4D and Borderlands, there is the unnofficial "Split Screen Tool", which is a freeware, 3rd party app that will allow multiple controllers and multiple instances of the game running at once, all in a borderless windowed mode. It also forces the game to display at odd resolutions, which works well for fitting both instances on the screen properly, but often times the game's HUD isn't designed for weird resolutions so it winds up with a tiny, tiny HUD. Either way, me and my best friend did couch co-op with Borderlands 2, and the tool was just updated to support The Pre-Sequel.

As for other games not supported by the Split Screen Tool, there is also a hack using a software called Sandbox I believe. I haven't ever used this method as it seems complicated to get set up (but should be reliable thereafter), it also doesn't force the game to run at weird resolutions, so if you can't set the resolution of the game to something like...1920x540 (that is half the width of standard 1920x1080)...you may wind up with like 40% of the screen unused, and for small displays that's just ugly and not practical. On the other hand, both the Sandbox method and the Split Screen Tool allow for dual screen set ups, so you could have one player on one screen and another on the other screen.

It really is sad that more games don't include local co-op support, though. Especially with more people turning PCs into Living Room drivers, it's sad that a game doesn't support couch co-op. ESPECIALLY if the game launched with the consoles and featured local co-op. I'm no dev, but certainly it wouldn't take a lot of resources to port that functionality over.
